Dennis Franz was the Real Deal not just another pretty polished American Actor. A Real Vietnam War Combat Veteran with United States 82nd Airborne Division and the 101st Airborne Division. David Caruso thought he could do better after he left the show. Well it took years until CSI had a spinoff in Miami. Meanwhile NYPD Blue kept getting better each season for years with Dennis Franz.

Dennis Franz is his usual phenomenal self here. Stunning performance. But I have to give a big, and well-deserved shot out to Daniel Roebuck here. He makes you believe he’s really that he’s this paranoid guy with something that really and truly has gotten to him and he is desperate to make someone know and understand where he’s coming from. You don’t for one second think he’s acting. He’s got 247 acting credits, with 14 more coming up. We see exactly why in this fabulous scene. Dennis and Daniel play off each other wonderfully.

Nobody respects life more than someone who has been to war and killed. Franz and through him, Sipowicz, conveyed a understanding of justice, mercy, fear and morality in this scene that is rarely seen on film. I'd call it a Master's level class on acting, but I'm not sure it was acting at all. And finally, Daniel Roebuck, was every bit up to the challenge of sharing the stage with Franz.

@@SamuelPearlman I agree. I certainly could see a younger Sipowicz just waiting for the opportunity to give SWAT a clear shot, and convincing himself that he was okay with that. But by this time Andy has moved far enough that he's asking how WE get out of this alive, rather than how I will. In an ad for the reruns on TNT which tied into TNT's slogan that "TNT is drama" one of the actors said "Drama is Andy Sipowicz trying to become a better man." I think that really sums it up well.

wikipedia says Franz served in both the 82nd and the 101st. I've never heard of that before. A buddy of mine at IBM, who served in the 82nd after Vietnam, told me in WWII both the 82nd and the 101st were true airborne: parachutists. But during Vietnam, the 101st was converted to "air mobile": helicopters. Regular army units use helos, the 101st was specially trained to repel from lines from hueys. I think the 82nd is the only US army unit today that are qualified parachutists.

Wow, what Sipowicz did for that madman who was just a distraught Vietnam veteran has got to be the greatest act of fearlessness since future president John .F. Kennedy piloted the P.T 109 as it was sliced in two by a Japanese destroyer and led his men through dark waters with sharks and shallow reefs to a desert island where they stayed for four days until a rescue boat came and JFK was decorated for courage in the line of mortal danger. Sipowicz talked that desperate man into giving up his gun with nerves of steel and a sympathetic heart while JFK swam his P.T 109 crew many miles to a desert island braving hungry sharks, jagged reefs, and Japanese bayonets. It would've taken the heart of a lion to talk a gunman that desperate out firing a single shot thereby saving him from an early tomb.

That's the thing. He's *crazy*, and clearly not genuinely violent. He really does just want people to know. The violence is simply a tool because he feels there are no other options.
