What a phenomenal police drama! I had never heard of this show till yesterday when I saw the marathon on Decades TV. I was born in 1965, and grew up in New Orleans. NYPD was never shown in reruns down here. I only wish the episodes were longer. It’s not only great writing, and acting. It’s also a fantastic time capsule, as it was filmed on location. My favorite line: Jack Warden; “There’s a guy in there’ll give you all the ventilation you want”.

Filmed at the immortal McSorleys Ale House, oldest bar in NYC and one of the best bars in North America. Lincoln gave his famous speech at the Cooper Union down the street and reportedly had a brew at McSorleys afterwards. A cop over 120 years ago handcuffed a perp to the bar rail, went to use the bathroom and on returning found the bad guy had wiggled out and escaped. Jut then his Sgt. walked in and ordered him to leave the handcuffs in place. For the rest of his career, every time the poor beat cop walked by the open doors the regulars would rattle the cuffs to hoots of laughter. The cuffs are STILL attached to the bar rail. I just happened to tune in to this episode today, September 26, 2020. I looked up details on it and it ran on September 26, 1967, I think I will go out and get a lottery ticket with 9 - 26 - 19 - 6 7 - 15 - (7) The number 15 is for McSorley's street address, 7 for luck. What the heck it's only a buck.

And ironically,"NYPD" is now 50 years old, as it debuted on ABC in Fall 1967. it was realistic and gritty, for the 49 episodes that were produced. "NYPD BLUE" was an entirely different story, but it would've been interesting if Frank Converse or Robert Hooks guest starred on the latter.

Sufferin' Sucatash ! Enjoyed watching this very much ! Thanks for uploading the whole episode ! I recall seeing lots ot TV commercials for it when it originally ran on ABC when I was kid. I vividly recall that opening with the big NYPD letters & the police rooftop strobe. Though I don't remember watching any complete episodes at the time; it probably was aired after my bedtime. Or my folks watched something else when it was on. Am surprised this series & "Felony Squad" (which ran around the same time & was also on ABC) were only a half hour long. Most cop shows were an hour long (except for Dragnet, Adam-12 & a few others). And it was a kick to see a commercial for Larks cigarettes. That was my brand when I smoked. I gave up the habit in '84.

I know that neighborhood in the opening sequence. Around Washington Square Park. The truck watering the street is going east on Washington Square South. The glass building on the left is an NYU building (it's still there). When the truck rolls over the camera, you can see the tower of Judson Memorial Church. Later, the two coppers turn right, head south down Thompson Street, and pass the side of the Judson Church building to where the guy's sleeping in the car. This is Thompson, between West Third Street & Wash Sq South. The guy's parked on the west side of the street. You can see the Washington Memorial Arch in the background. At around 0:50 you see the corner of W 3rd & Thompson. Down the block a little you see a white sign sticking out from the wall, about 1 story above the street. That's for a parking garage that's still there. I think the sign's still there too. The white building on the SW corner has been knocked down and replaced in the last five years. The red brick building the bad guy's parked in front of is NYU also. Don't know if it was back then. I pass this corner and these buildings every day. Still looks pretty much the same.

RRaquello Sounds like you know that neighborhood pretty good , I can't say I know it that good but I certainly remember Washington square park , spent a lot of time and money there in the 70s , remember lots of good times there , and around the west village ,,,, I lived in Brooklyn then and my brother and me would cut school and hang out in NYC , later on when we were teenagers we'd go for the entertainment ,,,,, what an time we had . We had those water trucks around us , and the guy would fill it by a hydrant on our street , we'd all wait in anticipation for the water to come spilling out the top letting the driver know it was full . it was definitely a different time .

@@williammorse8330 I haven't seen him. Up till recently they were doing a lot of renovation work in the park, so things were kind of mixed up, with some parts of the park closed off. I think they finally finished the renovation (new restrooms being the big new improvement) after what seemed like 10 years work. Then there is the virus, so I'm guessing that the park was closed at least for a while. I haven't been around there for a year or so, so I don't know how it looks, post-Covid.
