To see this great band play this song live brings back so many fond memories of seeing them in my home town in Canada. My buddy and I were lucky enough to meet Dave Greenfield, just by chance, after the concert and what a great guy he was. Chatted with us for close to a half-hour about mainly music. Marty and I were blown away. The man was a true gentleman. When I saw this video on this site I had to click on it. I'm 67 now and I'm not ashamed to say I'm in tears watching it. Knowing you're no longer with us Dave, may you RIP. God bless you, your family and all of your mates. You were truly one of the greats. Your music will live on for all of us to treasure.

Well said my friend.I only ever got to meet Dave once back in 1987 after a Stranglers gig in Glasgow.Dave was with his wife Pam in the holiday Inn having a few drinks.he lend me his resident card so I could get a drink at the bar.then me and my mate's sat with JJ Burnel having a good laugh.JJ and Dave were really sound and so down to earth.if I could go back in time that night would be it.this so happy memory will live with me till the day I die.😎😍😇

Remember reading years ago that the keyboard part by Dave was something he came up with during the meninblack sessions in 1980. He presented it to Hugh and Hugh said put that to the side and we can come back to it in the future. Dave had intended it to be a keyboard section on the song 'second coming' of course Dave being Dave he brought it back one day during the la folie sessions after JJ and Hugh went to the pub and told Jet and Dave to come up with a song by the time they came back. When they came back Dave said I've still got this from a year ago and Hugh had forgotten, Hugh loved it, went away for about 15 minutes and wrote the lyrics and that was golden brown. Jet said it's going to be a smash hit. Ironically JJ never played a note on the studio version as the bass was done by Dave on the keyboards.

A truly great creative and accomplished effort. A stand out in the history of modern music. It is easy to say that now as its merit becomes increasingly evident. Even though this is not of the same caliber as the old days, it is lovely to see them still take it on. An icon in modern music and so far ahead of the featureless drivel being produced now.

Amazing song and I suspect that not many know the true meaning of the lyrics. Hugh was a young lad having a sleepover at his best friends house. The following morning the friend's mum was making breakfast and she asked Hugh how he liked his toast - 'Golden Brown' he responded. All morning the phrase was spinnig around in his head and finally, unable to stand it anymore, he rushed home and penned the lyrics for this iconic song. The rest as they say, is history. True story.

I used to go see them at the Nashville Rooms in West Kensington, big old pub right on the corner of North End Road and Talgarth Road W14. I only live a few minutes walk away. They were amazing and totally captivating. Their gigs used to be proper mental. Always going off in the audience and the band too. I also saw them at Wembley Stadium on August 11th 1979. I still remember the day as if it was yesterday. What a line-up too. In order of appearance: Nils Lofgren AC/DC with Bon Scott Stranglers The Who. All for the enormous sum of £8 per ticket and I paid a tenner for 2. Stranglers were one of the best live and studio [but for me live] British bands of all time. Never the same after Hugh left [my opinion]. R.I.P Dave Greenfield
