Stalled very early - embarrassingly early!. That 1,2,4 projected into row 2 nailed it for me..... but only after watching your solve! I hope that I can remember this 'trick' for the future.

Heh -- this was indeed a harder one. I missed the NYT trick in c5 - I got there by finding the triple in box8 for c5 (yield the two 6,9 pairs). I'm embarrassed to say that I unlocked this puzzle -- after staring at it for an eternity -- by finding a 3,7,8,9 quad in r2. That quad collapsed the puzzle for me -- but it took me a little over an hour to get there. Thanks for another great solve.

I broke it up in a very similar route, but I did several steps, like, in reverse. I guess I found the differences between your methods and my good old goodliffing. You find the solutions way quicker than me. I think I still need a lot of practice!

Found the geometries for once, missed the pointing threes in box three for the longest time. And then screamed at the screen that row 1 only has one open digit left... Somehow my solution did not need the 45 pair, IIRC filling sixes made a lot of the rest collapse.

It's a "hidden triple" if you want the common name for it. For context, I'm speaking about the board state at 3:47 in the video. All rows, cols, and boxes have one of every digit. This is Sudoku rules. So, by the rules, r2 needs one each of 1, 2, and 4. How many cells does that require? Not a trick question, it requires exactly 3 cells to accommodate the 124. So, where do they go? If you inspect r2, there are only 3 cells that can have 124, so those cells must have 124. So, we can't put anything else into those cells. I often use "geometry" to find this. This is just a nice way to see it quickly, but isn't required by any means. I see that 124 in box 1 all avoid r2, meaning that they need to end up in r2 somewhere in boxes 2 and 3. This means instead of 3/9 cells we're already down to 3/6 cells that they need to go in. Since 3 other cells are occupied by values that aren't 124, we get it down to three. This is very quick to see as you scan and doesn't require any additional penciling.

It is not a hidden triple, it is a quadrilateral in the second row, consisting of the numbers 3, 7, 8, and 9. These numbers were imprisoned inside 4 squares, and any number that came out would be killed

@@SudokuMAN "It is not a hidden triple" is objectively incorrect. Just because you can also view it as a 3789 naked quadruple doesn't mean that it isn't also a hidden triple.
