When it comes to unsung heroes in rugby league, Jeff Whittaker, is up there with the best.
A proud Halswell Hornet, Jeff was part of the first ever Hornets side to play in the Canterbury Rugby League premiership. He also played in their first Grand Final appearance in 1984, and their first Premiership victory in 1985.
After hanging up the boots in 1987, he would go on to coach grassroots-level Halswell and Canterbury teams, before going to to coach all the NZ 16s, 18, 19s Secondary Schools sides, and develop the finest talent coming through New Zealand, with many going on to be Kiwis.
For his dedication and service to rugby league, Whittaker was inducted as a NZRL life member in 2024.
This is his story.
