Okay, we're almost all making HP references, but does anyone just realize how PERFECT this song is for the scene ? This song is talking about the World War 2 holocaust and I'm not going to explain why there also one in the movie (the politic with muggleborn by the Ministry is obvious). But first, the lyrics are from the point of view of the adults: adults who failed to protect their children from the war and its horrible consequences. It's the same in HP, the adults have failed to protect the younger generation from Voldemort and in the end they are the one who have to fight something beyond them (it started before they were even born and is so much more powerful). Plus, the adults in this song apologize for failing at protecting them, addressing themselves directly to the children. In the movie, the children (Harry and Hermione (yes they're children, remember they're only 17)) heard the song on the radio, so it's like if the adults were talking to them through it. More than just an apology, the lyrics also encourage the children to 'rejoice' and 'lift their voice'. There is still hope in the children, even when/where the adults have failed. This is the case in the movie : adults couldn't destroy Voldemort, their children did. Harry and Hermione (and the other not present in this scene) are the hope of the wizardry world. At the end of the song, it talks about deportation (the trains sending people to a kingdom), however they don't seem to lead people to their death but to a certain happiness and freedom, which is weird at first, but then, remember the adults are talking to the children : they give them an illusion because maybe they can save them, but they can try to keep them happy and hopeful. In the movie, during this scene, Hermione is heartbroken and Harry is also pretty sad, but they dance, in a way escape the reality of the war around them and their friend leaving to find some comfort and end up smiling. The adults are lulling them into an illusion to make them feel better (both in the song and in the movie (if you replace the adults by the radio)). However, the illusion doesn't last forever and when the song stop, they are back to reality and it's still horrible and sad. That's why Hermione stops smiling pretty fast, because she is back to reality. The illusion didn't make the war disappear. The song in itself is pessimist: they can't do anything to avoid what's happening to them, and that's exactly the same in the movie. Adults can't save them, they can just send them a moment of piece, but in the end the children are truly alone and without any help. Just like the situation of Harry, Ron and Hermione during the entire movie. It just perfectly fit and completely emphasis what they are feeling in this moment. (Sorry for my English: I'm French)

First off, I 100% agree with you. I don't think that any other song could have been better for the momment, and it really did give that feeling of hope and happiness to Hermione and Harry while playing. Second, your English is great!

I didnt think that's why she was sad after dancing with Harry. I understand your point and it's a really good valid point. BUT I think the reason she was depressed was because she had to give up her family and she was growing feelings for Ron. So when Ron accused her of loving Harry and not him it took a toll on her. One because she has always struggled with people, never had friends, never really had feelings for someone. So when Ron left accusing her of doing that it hurt her. because he was blind to her feelings towards him. Him and Harry are the only family she has left. So I understand why she was upset. It wasn't because of the war(kinda was) It mostly has to do with her connection with Ron and Harry. * * * So when Harry asked her to dance he was just trying to take her mind off of the pain she was going through. He understands what she is going through and he is being a friend there and to show her he is there to support her through it all. He danced with her to help her, and to make her happy.

How hasn't any body seen this? It's talking about death. " The train that goes to the Kingdom." Or, "Once was chained but now I'm free." Kingdom is a proper noun. It's talking about heaven. The train is the ride they await to be taken away. It's talking about everyone getting old and dying, finally, "Finding the light that was lost"
@muhamme010 жыл бұрын
Yes I thought about. Especially the part of getting and being old. It was sad somehow. If I was 70 and listened to this I would totally be crying.

I think the thing that is so great about this song, and the scene.. Is that it really expresses who they are as characters. No, it didn't happen in the book. And no it isn't the exact same. But, I mean, the expression is so great it is honestly such a huge scene. Hermione and Harry had a bond that no one else had in the books, in the story. The two of them were close, very close. Harry and Hermione confided in each other a lot, especially during 6th year when Ron was dating Lavender. He drove a wedge between the trio with his choice, and rather it was knowledge or not it was something that drove Hermione and Harry closer to create a friendship that was powerful. I don't think it was honestly hinted at that they were going to get together - ever, but maybe that was because I have a friendship much like theirs to base an experience off. But this song, is so powerful. Granted the overall meaning that everyone really understands but for them, for this scene to happen. It couldn't have happened without this song, honestly. And those ending lyrics, bringing it home; "Hey little train! We are all jumping on The train that goes to the Kingdom We're happy, Ma, we're having fun And the train ain't even left the station Hey, little train! Wait for me! I once was blind but now I see Have you left a seat for me? Is that such a stretch of the imagination?" It's just so perfect because, it's exactly what they were going through at that time. The two of them were lost, alone and all they had was their friendship. Was each other. They had no clue, no help, nothing to lead them just each other so they wouldn't die. It was like, they could see the ending, they could feel it but it wasn't quite the reality. The scene was perfect, but this song was even more so.

A very well put together video for a wonderful, though disturbing song. One of my all time favourites.

It's 52 minutes past 4 in the afternoon and I've pretty much hit the bottom. What keeps me going is not the love of the man I love or the love of the God I love, what keeps me going is His threat of hell for those who commit suicide and this song makes it easier to keep breathing. Thank you.

love the song, but it really kinda makes me sad, I don't know why it just does. And this song makes the whole scene in Harry Potter!!

Many people are talking about nostalgia!! That's true but to me this song is also about the wishful future which people envision. That specific moment where this music would play and make things perfect.......
