To the general public, it wouldn’t have made a difference, you’re right. People are just highlighting a pattern of continued lying throughout his life. The 1995 trial, the stealing of sports memorabilia, and plenty of other things. It was never him, even when he knew he was dying, and was confronted with the truth, which by all accounts, was his right to privacy, killer or not. I personally think he knew that many people would’ve relished in his downfall, and therefore, he wanted to die “suddenly,” so as not to face that backlash, he couldn’t face anything head on historically.

It's a very sad story. the man was one of the greatest football players of all time. How fast that can be taken away with poor choices. I'm so sad that he didn't feel his family deserved a better person, better father, husband friend. He had the money to seek the best therapy in the world.
