Originally published in Boston by C.H. Keith in 1843, with the endorsement, “As performed by The Virginia Minstrels, words by Dan Emmett”, one of the founders of the minstrel tradition. In 1854, It was included in a new collection, "White’s New Ethiopian Song Book", published in Philadelphia. This book’s preface attributes the melody of 'O Lud Gals' to Charles White. This song is one of the many popular comic tunes published in the "1855 Briggs Banjo Instructor".
We learned this song and several others from an excellent album by renowned Virginia folk-musician, Joe Ayers, called "Banjos, Bones, and Boatmen". As evidenced here by our 'enthusiastic' performance, 'O Lud Gals' is one of our favorites.
