"...he was aiming to shoot I down, ao yea, I shot him down." That's what he says. It's storytelling with music. Absolute genius.

More great Bob Marley tunes: Buffalo Soldier, Redemption Song, Exodus. I find these songs important in that you can learn about being poor in Jamaica and becoming Rastafarian. These are favorites of mine but there are many more. BTW he wrote and sang 38 songs.

Started with the Wailers in the 1960s before they were Rastafarian. They were more of a Calypso sounding band. Peter Tosh came out of that band. Check them out.

Aiming to shoot I down... Rastafari refer to themselves as I not me...this is why they say: I and I

“The Esther Anderson film is very interesting and provides glimpses of the home videos that Bob and Peter were making. She explains that Bob expected a child but birth control pills had been used. He didn't like that and we got this song. My guess is that "I shot the sheriff" refers to Bob inseminating a woman, "every time I plant a seed, he say kill it before it grows" refers to the action of the birth control, and "I did not shoot the deputy" means that it wasn't Bob who killed the fertilized egg. If all this is correct, what an amazing song for how well it hides the real meaning!” This was posted by a man named Jim Hunter from Minnesota on a song facts article. I’m not positive what is or isn’t true but I have seen a couple of articles where Esther makes a statement saying she helped write the song and it was about birth control.

Also Deputy is referred to as a police officer, however the sheriff would be the officer in charge of the department. So in reference to the above comment he shot/got the girl pregnant but he did not shoot/birth control the child. It’s an interesting discussion if true.
