I totally understand. I married an American and live in the USA. When kids were little, they used to point out how my pronunciation was different than my husband. Being Japanese, "L" and "R" were difficult to differentiate in the begining. I was only Asian in the school system and I was being stared at always back then. It was almost 50 years ago. Things changed so much and I no longer stand out as a foreigner. About the letter from school, I had to ask my husband to make sure that I read it correctly.
There are lots of knowledge to learn from your mother, Miss Anna. I'm sure you will aced them and increase a mother daughter relationship.
