Have seen dons requests to show how I do my scenery. This part covers some on sculptamold, plaster/carving and using wood stains. Next part will cover basics of ground cover and plants

Once more dear Bill, love how you show your rock making technique. Especially the way you emphasize the strata in comparison to the ones a bit further in the back. Really makes the scene stand out as our eyes would find it in nature. And, indeed perspective; the lines scribe the vanishing points into the beholder’s eyes. The blending of the strata enhance the visual quality and depth of the postage stamp scene. Even without ground cover, dirt, painted tracks, trees and underbrush the whole little scene looks very awesome. Thanks 🙏 for sharing.

Vincent thank you !! Nature is the ultimate inspiration and our layouts a little canvas to capture that 😃

Looks fantastic Bill.. i am able to watch your videos as well as a few other modelers in 1.25 speed. A 16 minute video becomes 12 , nothing is lost due to the increased playback speed. Cheers😃
@modelrailroadadventureswit63472 жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! I’m going to have give that playback speed a try as well 👍🏼

This is an incredible result for your rock strata. I've been amazed watching you build up an area until completion and seeing the realism as it all comes together in the final result. I'm guessing you rely heavily on reference for the area you are modeling? Amazing results, and thank you for sharing your techniques and results! Recent subscriber, and had to make a playlist of your On3 build so I could come back and get through all the videos so far! 😁👍

Great scenery and a great tutorial! So We’ve seen you build three layouts now… curious how many have you done that we haven’t seen?
@modelrailroadadventureswit63472 жыл бұрын
So before I started the HO the last modeling I did was an N Scale layout 30 years ago. Before that by about 15 years was an HO Scale layout built as a teenager. 😄

You know something Bill: it's 𝑎𝑙𝑚𝑜𝑠𝑡 annoying how simple you make that look. It looks terrible at every stage, until that 💥Boom💥 moment when it all comes together. It looks like you've spent hours with the stains, blending and shading every piece.😁👌 I really want to give this atry, if I ever get round to starting the wee N scale layout I've been planning for thirty+ years. For Scottish Highlands rock, I think my stains will need to be blacks and greys, rather than the brownish tones you're using. Last time I started a layout, I used actual rock, picked up from beside the line I was trying to represent .......... and it looked absolutely awful.🤔

Thanks!! You know it sounds like it’s time to build again 😁. Start off with some scrap material and have fun doing some carving . You’ll have your railroad moving along well in no time . I tried using real rock too many years ago as well as tree bark. Did not look right 😂

@@modelrailroadadventureswit6347 I keep threatening to start something Bill but space is the biggest problem. We're in a 1-bedroom flat and there's hardly room for us, never mind a layout.

Another great job and video. Thank you for showing how and why you use the wire brush. Another question is why you use the plaster over the skulpamold (if I am close to spelling it correctly)? Does the plaster pick up fine details and washes better or something else?
@modelrailroadadventureswit63472 жыл бұрын
Hey Rick thanks!! So for me a couple of reasons. First is by using a base of sculptamold I have a very strong base but one that is easy to drill holes in fof ghd large trees I plant in the ground. The sculptamold drills easy and doesn’t crack. You can smooth and carve sculptamold too but for the rock types I do I find that applying the plaster over the sculptamold gives a better result. Like you noted I can get finer detail in the carving of the plaster where I want to emphasize rock bedding.

I love the videos Bill, are you by any chance in broadcasting? My dad was, and you definitely have a 'broadcast set of pipes'; your delivery sounds sorta like a baseball radio voice?????????

Thanks!! Over the years I’ve been asked that a lot - I guess I should have made a different career choice 😁. No broadcasting background for me

Bill..Would you be kind enough to tell us the rock stains and brands you use? Available at Lowes?
@modelrailroadadventureswit63472 жыл бұрын
Hi John. What I have been using for this build are Varathane products. Ebony, Flagstone and Summer Oak are the colors I use. To my eye they were close to colors Ivd seen on rocks before 😄
@johnsherwood51022 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill. Thanks. It seems Home Depot carries Ebony and Summer Oak but not Flagstone. Where do you purchase yours, my friend?
