Excellent editing. A lot of editors make the mistake of simply putting an audio track over muted clips, at most synchronizing music with transitions or events, or overlaying a bit of a speech. You layered multiple sounds over the music, synchronized with emotional triggers. For example, the echoing talking in the background at 1:28, makes one think of a crowded conference, a school assembly, a church, being in a crowd, combined with rally and march scenes to make one feel "part of it" or "one of the people", then gradually transitioning to military scenes, showing the military as an extension of "the people". The speech at 2:04 with the pause synchronized with the gap in the lead, then you switch to the buglers with a "low-high" melody which MATCHES THE SPEECH BEFORE BOTH IN TIMING AND MELODY. The sound design is really crowded but I think that actually adds to it. Makes it feel busy and alive. Disco Inferno is a good choice too, the 'disco' parts fit the time period well and the synth parts go hard as hell. You should try and rediscover what you did here because your newer edits are a lot more generic and boring.

DDR was a great state and as a swede I miss it after 2 visits including working there. Now I am trying to rewive it a little with my personal communist museum with a lot of GDR stuff. My 2 DDR synths and 2 drum machines + 3 effects is a huge reminder of how good socialism can be!

@nachtjager_junkers I have something from almost any socialist country. I have soviet stuff too and russian stuff. I have 15 soviet synths, 15 drum units, effects, pedals and a mixer. I have800 pins/badges from Yugoslavia, bust with Lenin, Trotsky Marx, Engels etc. Soviet pins, flag banner, officer infantry hat etc.

I have some soviet toys (metal cars and plastic soldiers at most), big old radio, GDR model railway in 1:160 scale, some soviet coins, school physics visual aids (not sure that i translated it correctly, i mean stuff for electric experiments, model of four-stroke engine, etc.) My grandfather was an officer (colonel), and he was in GDR for a few years. I have his cap as a memorable thing.

Fun fact: the nva’s helmet was actually designed during ww2. It provided as much protection as the German m35 (ww2 German helmet) with the an extra perk: it was specifically made to ricochet bullets. The Wehrmacht recommended this, alongside the new assault rifle prototype, be adopted as standards, but Hitler rejected them because he didn’t like the look of the helmet, and because he thought the assault rifle was a stupid idea. The only reason the StG-44 was adopted two years later was because they needed a cheap rifle to equip their troops. Thirteen years later, an new army, led by the officers he sent to die in Stalingrad, armed with rifles he thought as stupid, and equipped with the helmets he hated, was formed in the GDR.

Regarding the helmet design, I actually like it. Look much more original and practical than the overhyped m35 that has been used throughout both world wars. The GDR was a little powerhouse of a nation. They were the 10th largest Economy of the world, had a powerful and modern army of 200‘000 men, build nuclear power plants, developed their own microchip (U61000), created wealth for their people (everyone has a car, housing was cheap, there was public healthcare and everyone could afford holidays two times per year). Also did the GDR intervene in the Angolan, Mozambiqan and Ethiopian civil wars by sending military advisors and equipment.

Compared to Poland, Romania, Hungary or Albania or even the USSR, where people had to rely heavily on public transportation, the People of the GDR had quite the opposite and did. even have their own car culture.

DDR was the land who welcomed by dad's best friend from Somalia for a 3 years program in becoming an expert in machinery for typography (newspaper and such). He came back fluent in German and with stories of nice people, beautiful land and rich story. He wanted to go there, once Somalia descended in chaos, but DDR was destroyed and he settled in Italy, in the German speaking region. Kept buying few things, spoke German to his kids and visited multiple times. After 25 years out of the homeland, he went back to re-start the industry now that the country is back and he decided to call the first team he was supervisor, DDR. What a country the world lost.
