Beautiful lyrics: O solitude, my sweetest choice O solitude, o solitude My sweetest, sweetest choice Places devoted to the night Remote from tumult and from noise How ye my restless thoughts delight O solitude, o solitude My sweetest, sweetest choice O heavens, what content is mine To see those trees which have appeared From the nativity of time And which all ages have revered To look today as fresh and green To look today as fresh and green As when their beauties first were seen O, how (how) agreeable a sight These hanging mountains do appear Which th' unhappy would invite To finish all their sorrows here When their hard (their hard) fate makes them endure Such woes (such woes) as only death can cure O, how (how) I solitude adore O, how (how) I solitude adore That element of noblest wit Where I have learnt (where I have learnt) Apollo's lore Without the pains to study it For thy sake I in love am grown With what thy fancy (thy fancy) does pursue But when I think upon my own I hate it (I hate it) for that reason too Because it needs must hinder me From seeing (from seeing) and from serving thee O solitude, O how I solitude adore Source: Musixmatch

Worth noting the poet Katherine Philips, was a married woman. I see where her sentiment comes from. Solitude is so important, and I think the fact many of us have been stuck in pandemic "family bubbles" with relentless demands on our time from kids doing school remote etc. we can appreciate the sweetness of some quality alone time. What a sublime voice, and sensitive excellent lute performance. You are both rock stars! (I wonder, looking back in this in some years, the poignance of this piece, with the face mask of the lutenist, will resonate even more, in what I hope will be a painful memory of a very difficult time).

Brandon, was that piece originally with lute accompaniment? It has a very traditional Renaissance sound for a song written so late in the 17th century. Well done!!
@brandonacker3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Paul! It was written for voice and basso continuo. That means that you could accompany the voice with your choice of bass instrument or several instruments. I'm using the wrong lute in this recording. It should have been a baroque version of the lute but it worked the best for this piece.

Well done! I wonder how difficult is it to play continuo with a Renaissance lute? Is it possible for other pieces as well ? And just wondering why did you use your 7 course rather than your 8 course lute? :)
@brandonacker2 жыл бұрын
I only had one lute at this time. It is an 8 course lute that I sometimes play with only 7. (Depends on the repertoire) The lute had increasingly more bass strings as you enter the baroque period until they arrived at 14 courses, which is an archlute. But besides the extra basses, it's the same as a renaissance lute. So yes, continuo works quite well on a renaissance lute. Though the more open bass strings, the easier it is and more bass is always better for baroque music :)
