The last track is exquisite. Probably the most atmospheric and beautiful sound recording of a railway engine I ever heard.

Those recordings from the line through Green Cove are very beautifully haunting.. wish that line was still in place

Been to Roanoke & the O.Winston Link Museum. If you haven't put it on your bucket list. I've followed N&W for well over 20 years. Link's access & how N&W assisted in providing not only access but support. I think what I admire most about N&W is the designed & built their oun iron. Thanks for posting this. Have 1st addition vinyl in collection. Great stuff!!

3:36 That one blast by 605 perfectly represents the problem with 611’s whistle currently. 0:02 Is what it’s supposed to sound like.

This was 2 years after the derailment so that could have caused it. I have listened to other recordings of 611 during the 50s and that’s what it sounded like. Also, 605’s whistle was built during WWII so it probably had a steel whistle while 611’s original whistle was brass.

Wonder if the diesels heard passing at 7:14 were borrowed Atlantic Coast Line E's. Horns were pretty.

Sounds like a Nathan P5. Could've been Southern E's but the article states the diesels are at the head of a freight.

N&W’s RS-11’s had P5 Nathan horns as did some of their early GP-9’s. At some point all the GP-9’s were standardized with the Leslie RS5TRF horns. I would say chances are it was probably an RS-11.

I know it shows a picture of an abandoned locomotive at a quarry in Pembroke Virginia and I'm wondering what became of it was it scrapped on site or does it still exist
@AlexTrain5249
@AlexTrain5249 4 жыл бұрын
It was likely scrapped. Because looking at photos, all that remains there is some concrete structure.
