If you run too lean, you may think the sensor isn't working. Just doesn't have enough fuel to read so it doesn't work. If a sensor reads rich all the time (especially when off throttle), the sensor could be fouled out. Easy way to tell is by pulling fuel from the tune but it stays rich on the gauge. And if you have any exhaust leaks BEFORE the sensor (blown gaskets or exhaust cracks), that can mess with your proper fuel delivery because the oxygen that gets pulled in makes the ecu think the car is lean so it adds fuel, thus you run rich even though you think you have a proper reading. Just some things to keep in mind.

Another good point regarding them reading bad is if they get a knock, have heard some brand new o2s can fail or read wrong purely if they are dropped or hit so look after them guys

Awesome that answered most of my questions except for one. If I am venting my wastegate back into my downpipe should the O2 sensor be before or after the wastegate exhaust is introduced?
@V8sareslow111 ай бұрын
That really shouldn't matter honestly so long as no oxygen is able to flow past the sensor. If a wastegate dumps to atmosphere, that exhaust never sees the O2 sensor anyway. However, keep in mind that the wideband will only tell a reading of all cylinders combined. If one cylinder is running leaner than another, your wideband reads the average of all cylinders, and might be difficult to tell that one cylinder is lean (somewhat clogged injector for example) . Just something to keep in mind.

I work on everyday cars, and they do go bad and still read, if your cars idling and the afr is jumping around all over the place, chances are it’s bad. On fords we can data log the current that the o2 is using to monitor the afr, usually it’s close to 0.0 mA on a 14.7 afr. If it’s reading kinda out there like for example.437 mA at idle it’s probably bad, the engine run of the other sensor in closed loop fault, If that helps anyone.

I have my 2 waste gates plumbed back into the single 4 inch exhaust heading back the car to the firewall out of a single turbo mounted in typical radiator spot. Should my O2 be mounted 8-12 inches from the turbo or move back and pick up the waste gate gasses too? The waste gate dump into the 4 inch is approximately 12-14 inches from the turbo. Is that a concern?

I also have heard that extended periods of key on, engine off is supposed to contribute to the death of sensors. I do not know the science behind it, but may be something worth exploring further or even testing.
@V8sareslow111 ай бұрын
It heats them up from the constant key on and off cycling. Eventually shorts them out. The new AEM wideband sensors are TERRIBLE about this. I install my power wire at the fuel pump relay so that the wideband won't turn on unless the car is running. I don't want it powering up just from an ignition switch turn when I don't plan on starting the car. Uploading a new tune for example.

Absolutely they can go bad and still read as a tuner I have a mounted aem Wideband for my supercharged Sierra and you can spot it when your chasing you tail dialing in your fuel lol. It will be sporadic or unstable . Closed loop divers or no Wideband well if it’s still operating within the error threshold no DTC will set and your fuel mileage will probably tank , fuel trims will be unstable or just poor performance. Plus super dangerous for you vehicle. If you went 100,000 miles there well over do. God Bless.

Spark plug reading
@V8sareslow111 ай бұрын
Sensors can lie (and also has a delay). Spark plugs don't. Good to watch the sensors but don't rely on them 100%. Learning to read plugs is a good skill to learn. Especially with different fuels.

Thank you Doug , any problem with O2 sensor overheating that close , I have had some problems with my AEM fouling fast on race gas any thoughts ? On a side note do you modify your Alternator when you you run a 14 volt battery ? Thanks again Doug .
@roylcarter873 жыл бұрын
Alot of O2's don't live very long with an oxygenated fuel. And no there's no mods to do for the alternator since they produce 14.2-14.7 normally.
@MotionRaceworksOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Haven’t ever had an issue with race gas personally especially when applying these principles. But not saying it’s Not an issue. I typically put mine in that 8-12 inch range. On the alternator no modifications needed
@marcstlaurent37193 жыл бұрын
@@roylcarter87 yes but you need 16.8 volts to service a 14 volt battery and put a surface charge on it hence why an alternator puts out 14.4 volts on a twelve volt system to cover the 2.4 volts per cell and how a 14 volt battery gets the extra voltage is with one extra cell for seven .
