Thank you so much! Glad I asked, I was curious why the spelling was different 😆

Shimazu Store in Honolulu is (in my opinion) better than Matsumoto. Also bigger LOL Added bonus: right up the street are the original Liliha Bakery, Foodland for fresh poke, and hole-in-the-wall Jane's for great saimin. Gives you a sense of what local life is like away from Waikiki. Hack: avoid the crazy lines at Marugame in Waikiki and hit the one in downtown Honolulu in Fort Street Mall.

Thanks for the suggestions!! We will definitely have to try those out next time! We had no idea there was another Marugame location, that would definitely be nice to avoid the long lines next time 😅

What temperature was the spam musubi served/eaten at? I'm trying to imagine it. Thanks for sharing - now I'm hungry!!
@MaxandSidney6 ай бұрын
Musubi is best enjoyed at a warm temperature! They are made fresh every day and kept warm at the stores! Thanks for watching, it was so fun to reminisce about all the tasty delights of O’ahu!

Majority of locals, including yours truly, prefer Spam sliced 1/4" thin & fried Crispy

You covered most of the popular foods on O'ahu, which is a good start for new visitors. The rice in plate lunches comes from Japanese immigrant food, not Filipino. The red beans (azuki) in shave ice that you've seen is also Japanese. Japanese pronunciation of "musubi" is not "muSUbi" -- more like "musuBI" and "udon" is not like "u-dawn" -- "O" is always pronounced "oh" in Japanese, so the "don" is pronounced like udohn" or the last syllable in "condone."
@MaxandSidney6 ай бұрын
Wow, had no idea those were the pronunciations!! Thanks for the info 😊 we were really impressed with the Japanese food on the island, and all of the food in general!

Rice is a staple from all asian immigrant groups who came to Hawaii. Certainly not unique to the Japanese...so silly. I’m positive that the kaukau tine sugar and pineapple planation laborers (yes, including Filipinos) ate from had rice.

You guys didn't eat poki? Aww man! The island is loaded with poki stops. Certainly on the next level as the OG of anything raw fish.

Kalua pig, not pork. Also not Kailua. Shave ice, not "shaved ice". Slippahs, never "flip flops"

If you want to pronounce "musubi" how we locals say it, please look up "Amanda and Felix musubi"

Love your attitude, but as a local Hawaii boy, I need to issue some corrections. 1. Not everyone from Hawaii is “Hawaiian”. Hawaiian is an ethnicity, so only native Hawaiians should be called that. The rest of use are just Hawaii people or Hawaii locals, or “kama`aina”. 2. Kālua pig is the right name, not Kailua. Kālua is a Hawaiian word that describes the cooking technique. 3. It’s pronounced MU-su-bi, not mu-SU-bi. 7-11 one is not the best because the spam is not crispy enough, but it’s fine in a pinch. Bob’s is solid. Guava Smoked is also worth checking out if you come back. I’m a malasada purist who likes no filling. Leonard’s is the best, but one of the bakers opened their own place called Pipeline’s that is also good.
