Sometimes just keeping a simple shape and letting the beauty of the wood shine through is the best option!
English Oak with Australian Jarrah. The Jarrah was recycled from The Rebuild Site www.rebuildsit... in Carlisle, originally this was elegant hardwood floorboards carefully removed and repurposed from a local house near Carlisle.
The finished bowl measures 127mm x 63mm (5" x 2 1/2").
Thank you for watching.

*If you shop through these links, I may receive a small commission. The price is the same for you, but it helps support me as a beginner woodturner in my quest to get a better lathe to make even bigger projects, and I really appreciate it!
Note this is NOT an instructional video, or designed for any education purposes, it is simply my own personal steps on my wood turning journey.

You make it look so easy! (I know it takes time and skill and patience to get to the level of turning you show us) I enjoy seeing the "chunk" become a beautiful bowl.

Jarrah is a phenomenal wood. It was called Swan River Mahogany by the early settlers (Swan River being in Perth, Western Australia). Gorgeous looking bowl. I would have loved to see you using Tasmanian Oak with the Jarrah (Perth born sandgroper here, now living in Tassie)

Looks beautiful. What make of toolrest do you use?
@RDMWoodturning

It was just a cheap 12” rest from Amazon. One of the better items that I’ve bought, much better than the standard 6” rest.

Do you find your lathe powerful enough?
@RDMWoodturning
@RDMWoodturning 10 сағат бұрын
For most turning, yes. Once over 250mm diameter with a dense material it starts to stutter, but it’s manageable. Perhaps a bigger lathe next year.

What size chuck do you use?
@RDMWoodturning
@RDMWoodturning Ай бұрын
I use a Charnwood Viper 2 chuck most of the time. The jaws fit a 40mm mortise, so it is useful for smaller projects. 👍

Do you keep them or sell ? what would your price for each bowl you made??
@RDMWoodturning
@RDMWoodturning Ай бұрын
I give a lot away as gifts for friends and family. If I do occasionally sell them at a craft fair I usually just do diameter multiplied by height, then plus how many hours spent (all in inches) then adjust for type of wood. E.g. a 6x2 inch bowl that took 2 hours, would be £14 minimum, then adjust for type of wood. Hope that helps. I’m sure that everyone does it differently. 👍

Nice, simple bowl. What do you do with the pieces you make on your channel?
@RDMWoodturning
@RDMWoodturning Ай бұрын
I usually give them as gifts, but if I get a backlog of 30+ bowls, I'll go to a local craft fair and sell some... I just don't like parting with them 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
