Maybe they should re-design the seating arrangements in baseball stadiums so that fans cannot interfere with a ball in play. Wouldn't that make sense???!!!

5 years later and Angels HR line in RF is now UNDER the scoreboard. So anything above the bottom part of the scoreboard is a HR, regardless of fans.

JOHN RMIREZ, Not true. Runners are placed according to umpire's judgment. They could get one base or three bases depending on the situation.

butera diaries he's fast but theres almost no way he couldve gotten a triple considering how quickly the ball left the bat and would have hit the wall. if he tried its about a 60/40 he gets thrown out at 3rd imo and they dont do fringe calls like that.

@@MattZRJSRoxy, I think the benefit of the doubt needs to be given to the fielder since he was deprived of the opportunity to make a play on the ball. If there was no interference and the ball was played cleanly off the fence, who is to say a good throw would not have caused Trout to be put out at second or third base as he tried to stretch the hit?

Because they ruled interference, the play automatically ends, I think. Since Trout was at second at the time, that is where he was put, due to the play ending.

Brian, managers know that arguing after a replay review by the crew in NY is an automatic ejection. Scioscia probably knew he would be ejected and the umpire followed the rule. Walking away or not, the ejection was appropriate.

@@alanhess9306 Yes. See the yellow line across the top of the wall. That's the home run line. It hit the guys arm above that line. The Umpires even called a home run. But the fan interfered by sticking his arm out into the field of play, which technically makes it interference.

Based on the trajectory and velocity of the baseball while also accounting for wind speed and rotation of the earth it was definitely a HR. I have a Doctorate in Baseball Science so I know these things.

KoachKrab127 that works, people will still lean over if they think they have a chance at the ball though. which could cause people to fall over into the bullpen / whatever is underneath the wall. but thats still the best way ive seen anyone come up with.

My understanding is that interference ends the play immediately. I think that NY said that because of where the glove is compared to the wall, its not possible to say that it is going to be a HR, and that is why they put him a second, instead of a HR or 3rd. Because the play ended and that was where he was at the time.

that's not how interference calls work Braden. Once fan interference is declared it's a dead ball and it's up to Umpire judgment on what the correct ruling is for the runners. Granted if the Replay Center felt it was a Homerun then they obviously could've ruled it as such but they obviously felt differently.

Robby LaFavor if you reach over the boundary and into the field of play, it is fan interference. A ball that's hit in between the lines must clear the fence in order for the fan touch it. Even if the ball looks like it's going out for a homerun, the fan has to wait until it clears the fence in order for the fan to touch it, and doesn't matter how high the wall is. By the letter of the rule, that's still interference.

If it takes that long for these replay fools to make a call, the umpores call should stand. They dont have the benefit of 3 or 4 minutes to make a call. It amazes me how many times replay gets it wrong.
