The fact that one little acorn will grow over a million time it's size to a magnificent oak tree and will produce tens of thousands more acorns that will grow an entire forest to host all the wildlife and beetles is amazing! I always carry an acorn in my pocket, I've had some amazing meditations around oak trees in the forest, they have so much wisdom to share with us!

I planted 3 acorns in October 2021, and in just 1 month 2 of them became 4 inches tall with 4 leaves. (3rd one died). They stayed that height all winter when I kept them inside. I planted them outside April 25. Since it was still chilly, about 30-65°F (-1 to 18°C) they partially turned orange because they thought fall was coming. Another one of them died soon after. Only 1 remaining. As it got warmer the tree turned slightly more green but never became completely green. For nearly 3 months that last tree never grew. I thought it would never grow taller at least until next summer. In fact 1 of the leaves dried up and fell off because of a drought. Just now, July 13, as I was watering my tree, I finally saw new leaves sprouting! 😁😁😁 The first time it grew at all in 8 months! This made me so happy you have no idea. Never give up on your tree! (Unless it’s completely dead.)
@eilonj3 ай бұрын
If you have kept your tree indoors, you had to take it outdoors gradually: first at 15 degrees C (at night) in the shadow (one week), later in half shadow (3 weeks) and eventually in ful sun. Your small tree needs the time to get new leaves adapted to full sun. The old ones are not.

I have an oak tree in my backyard. It had one odd branch that grew out horizontally. I decided to remove that one branch. It was on the ground in the yard for a while before I cut it up. I got curious as to how many acorns this tree was producing. So one day, I got out there on my hands and knees and started counting. I'm sure I missed a few, but got up to 800. Estimating the rest of the tree based on that count, I figured around 8-10,000. The tree is about 40' tall. The squirrels love it.

How fascinating. I am curious about the pattern of how a tree grows. Would those initial leaves become the wooden branches? Or do branches come out of different spots later on? I am also fascinated by how the third plant that sprouted didn't grow as tall as the others. Perhaps that space was already taken, but how the oak would know about that is quite mysterious to me.

Awesome, I planted 3 acorns a few weeks ago, 2 germinated, and I will move them outside in May, and I’ll still keep checking in on them often. They’re growing a lot faster than I thought they would. I’ve noticed that the leaves keep folding closer to the stem, and unfolding, as I check on them.
@Vmurph3 жыл бұрын
I did too. 3 of them, as well. I planted them in early Nov, and 2 of them germinated in late Nov-early Dec. In Jan, one of them sprouted two tiny leaves and then just stopped. Then it started to die. Two weeks ago I lifted it out of the soil to try to rescue it and found it had root-rot from the soil being too wet. I couldn’t save it. 😭 The other one only had a taproot, no sprout yet. It died as well. 😭 I’m so mad I threw away the other acorns, thinking I wouldn’t need them since 2 of them successfully germinated put down taproots.

Nice video. I've been growing an elm from a sprout and after a couple of years transplanted it out to the street (between buildings and side-walk). If it survives the lawnmowers for a year or two it'll shade buildings in the winter and lower AC costs, provide general shade, give dogs a place to pee, hopefully outlive me(hopefully inthat it'll live a long time ;) ).

My little oak tree that I planted from the acorn is doing something weird, which is why I’m here. It was planted November 1/21, and had 7 wide, green leaves by December 19/21. By February 15/22, all the leaves were fading and drying out. By mid-March, all the leaves had died and dropped off. I had checked the roots for bounding or rot and the roots looked healthy. Now I observe little green nubs growing at the top, and am hopeful that my little sapling simply went through a late fall cycle and is getting ready to make new leaves.. The mother tree who gave me the acorn is easily 200 years old, and I don’t see any new leaves yet from her. So I’m still hopeful.

An ordinary oak tree can live up to two thousand years. This is, in fact, the history of an entire civilization. Because, if we count time in steps of 25 years each, then we already have 80 generations of people. And if you consider that for these 2000 years one child will be born every minute, then a whole nation will grow up!
