Back in the 90s, a tornado tore through a couple of cities. In some areas, volunteers left because they were being harassed, having tools and things stolen, etc. Some damage was never repaired, though some was bulldozed. As for road money, lots of that gets siphoned off for other projects, gets spent on nonsense parks, boat ramps or whatever so some politician can put their name on it, or building roads and streets from some contributor's new housing development. Then costs have also skyrocketed worse than general inflation. So, rather than cut waste, they just raise more taxes and fees.

Now is the time to bring up the lawsuit in which a private citizen was fined for filling in the pot hole in this very city. He was suing because the reason for the citation was that they said he didn't do it properly, but he was someone that had a contract with another place to do the same work, so he showed that he did it legally better than the crews that are hired every few years. The court ruled that simply because he didn't have the contract that it was improper to fix his own road (the road in front of his house). Hard to feel sorry for them, no matter how hard I try.

I grew up in East Oakland in the 70s and 80s and if you didn't live in Sobrante Park, you didn't go to Sobrante Park, even back then. I wouldn't dare now. He'll I don't go to Oakland unless I absolutely have to, or I'm passing through on the freeway. I still live too close, just 20 mins northeast of San Francisco and Oakland!

It's also starting to happen in high crime areas where I work. Especially were that whole Floyd thing happened. Tweekers took anything that could sell for scrap. So, there's no lights. The roads are pitted and littered with potholes. Garbage is everywhere and these big stupid metal fists in various points. That make it a nightmare to even go near that area. It also makes it almost impossible for emergency personnel to get in there if something happens. They have to go like 2 or 3 blocks down on the one street that isn't tore up or blocked by a stupid fist statue. I

I just want to say the US is huge and this is the bay area, which is not all a representation of the rest of the country. For me to go from where I live to the Bay area is 8 hours by plane.
