My parents used to take me to the Oakland Zoo all the way from the lower Peninsula since as far back as I can remember. They told me when I was two years old I spelled out "OKN ZOO" with my toy plastic letters.

I don’t know - I’ve never seen a regular scooter there. But I have seen medical devices, like wheelchairs and scooters for people that have had trouble with one leg, things like that.

I grew up going to this zoo, now as an adult I find it so sad to see these magnificent animals locked in small cages with virtually no natural drive or instinct left.

Unfortunately there isn't really much of a "wild" for animals to return to. We think of Africa as a wide, open expanse, when in fact the only places where animals truly thrive are in managed populations/national parks like Amboseli, Masai Mara, Ngorongoro Crater, etc. The only animals at Oakland Zoo you could technically consider are in a "cage" are the chimpanzees, and even they have a highly enriched space and a dedicated keeper-staff. The world is an unforgiving place, with arbitrary political conflicts and ever expanding environmentally detrimental corporations clearing rainforests and bushland for products that we throw away after one use. Veganism especially is harmful for the environment habitat loss-wise, so one of the only ways of supporting habitat conservation is by donating to local groups directly like the Lewa Conservancy or the Turgwe Hippo Trust, or visiting zoos that directly partner with these organizations. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo puts out an "orangutan-friendly shopping list" regularly if you're interested, and they in particular championed the "Quarters for Conservation" initiative that's being used by zoos across the country.
