"D'You Know What I Mean?" is a song by English rock band Oasis. It was the first single from their third album Be Here Now. It reached number one in the UK Singles Chart, the third Oasis song to do so. It sold 162,000 copies in its first day in the shops and 370,000 by the end of the first week. The song was written by Noel Gallagher. It was certified platinum for UK sales.
In a 1997 interview promoting Be Here Now, Noel Gallagher had the following to say about the first single: "I was going to make up some profound statement in the chorus but I couldn't come up with anything that fitted. Then I just thought "All my people right here, right now. D'You Know What I Mean? Yeah, Yeah" Very vague, very ambiguous, that'll do. Look in the mirror and wink while you're singing it and it's quite saucy. And I fucking love that line, 'Coming in a mess, going out in style'. We were a bunch of scruffs from Manchester and we're going out in a Rolls Royce."
In another 1997 interview, this time on BBC, Noel Gallagher said: "I can't believe I wrote it, it's going to blow people away."
"The morse code in the background was inspired by Strawberry Fields. We got hold of a code book and tried to tap out 'Bugger All' to follow that line 'Don't look back cos you know what you might see'. But if anyone can tell me what we really said, please let me know. Profound lagerisms..."
The single cover photograph, by Michael Spencer Jones and directed by Brian Cannon of Microdot, was taken in front of the 'Blind Steps', a staircase in Wigan so called because they run past the Blind Workshop, which can be seen to the left of the shot. The steps can still be found on Darlington Street. The shoot was shrouded in secrecy to protect mass media coverage, but newspaper The Wigan Evening Post got exclusive rights to cover the event and subsequently sold the photos to the Daily Mirror. At a lunchtime break, Liam Gallagher and sleeve designer Brian Cannon enjoyed a pint of beer in the nearby Crispin Arms pub by Birkett Bank.

instead of just stating that he used the same chords, lets appreciate the fact he mananged to create 2 completely different legendary melodys/lyrics/songs over the same chords

Cocaine Rain I appreciate the Pre-Chorus. He uses E7 and then goes to E.. that is hard to do, really.

yeah and i definitely think thats due to hit limited knowledge of musical theory. Anyone who understands proper chords and keys would never think of switching to e after starting the song with em7....because on paper it doesn't work....thats what made noel so good at songwriting...his ability to be able to feel the chords and melodys regardless of what they were

Great version...a lot of the reason Be Here Now is slammed is unfair, just impossible expectations/Oasis burnout...but the other big reason is that there were some legitimately great tunes on it that were all but RUINED by overproduction, constant smothering in random unnecessary guitar riffs, soloing in the verses, overdubs, etc...so when you can hear the raw song like this exposed, it reveals the great song(s) that was there the whole time

Additional thoughts: Yeah, the acoustic version exposes how much the song does, and always did, use same chord structure as Wonderwall, but so what? Noel 'borrows' tons of riffs from other people, why not steal one from himself? Both songs can exist with similar riffs and still be good. But I also skip Wonderwall when I listen to "...Morning Glory" since it's so overplayed, so I'm biased. Also, I wish there were more like this, not necessarily acoustic, but somehow like "alternate" versions of Be Here Now songs without all the ridiculous guitar overdubs etc, stripped down, so we could here the album as it "should" have been...they should do a special edition where Noel goes back into the studio with the master tracks, guts out all the bullshit and puts it out..."Be Here Now...Naked" lol. Gotta write him a letter
