In my version of the petroleum boiler build is to use doors instead of a robo-miner. I.e. I place a door or two in the chute where the lava falls down into which are open at all times until it's time to clear out the rock. When that happens, the doors close which instantly annihilates the rock in question. It's faster and simpler than the robo-miner design and is much less likely to require maintenance or suffer from sour gas leakages or lava overflows, especially if you're having issues with insufficient power. Now you might be wondering where I put the temperature sensor. Beneath the bottom door, I have it submerged in a tile of liquid lead. The lead always stays liquid so there aren't any issues on that front.
@FrancisJohnYT5 жыл бұрын
Oh that is a use for lead that no other materiel could have covered, it's liquid between the boiling point of crude and the output temp of volcano's. If volcano's output was just 25C hotter it could turn the lead to gas, I wonder if the devs planned it that way. I'm stealing that idea for testing.

You're welcome about the top-access! .. or at least I've been doing that, too. Might have seen in dischord. But you might've seen it elsewhere as well :-D I've found that the blob of magma can sometimes still flash the drop of oil, even though it seemingly should always miss. I guess it depends if the magma "drips" down or "oozes" down. You've seen those water gooeyies in this vid, .. if magma does that, it flashes the oil drip. I don't know how to avoid that. So instead I moved the miner back one more tile. The slight diagonal the miner will need for that can be gotten by removing one corner tile below it. Ask on dischord if you need a screeny of what I mean. Dogsbodies: "Mammia Mia", "Momsicle" or "Yo momma" to stay near the mom thing. Or famous movie cleaning ladies: "Cinderella" and "Annie". I used your design for an oil boiler in my own base, but because I do what I do, I constantly deal with drops in service. I.e. holdups in oil delivery, plus I prefer to magazine petrol, so I modded it to be robust for variable flow, adt to be able to stop when the magazine is full. To do this I needed to add a petrol loop at the top leg of the flow from the boiler instead of the crude flow. this loop goes to a water chamber and drive a steam turbine to delete some heat. This ensures the petrol is below 400C when it hits the crude oil pipes (Prevent heat damage to those pipes) I added two safeties: a second temp sensor in the boiler chamber that goes red when below 400C and a pipe temp sensor on the petrol loop going to red if for some reason it goes above 400C. Both of these cut the oil flow. With these modifications I get a little power out and is robust to variable oil flow at the cost of using a bit more magma as the oil is a bit cooler when it hits the boiler.

If your not maxing it out at 10kg/s all the time then you are saving magma, so a little bit of heat loss should still leave you well within margin.

I'm glad we know now why the drill cooling oil drop would sometimes turn into sour gas. I thought the falling magma interacted with it but the door push makes more sense. I solved it back then by putting the drill on the side of the solid magma behind doors which would open to allow the drill to do it's job. But the timing circuit was complicated as hell. Also I read somewhere that you can prevent pipe breaking during phase change by only pumping 1/10 or the pipe's throughput. Might be possible to keep the oil in pipe all the time and let it change inside, dunno, but you would lose the counterflow....
@FrancisJohnYT5 жыл бұрын
To avoid the door push you can also lock the door :) the dupes kept going into the boiler room to grab the little bit of igneous debris that would every so often happen on the top of the two solid tiles. 1kg of liquid in a pipe will not state change, but to get 10kg a second you would need ten pipes. For a Sour gas boiler it's a great idea for Petroleum it's just simpler and way smaller to use the current design as far as I can tell.

I love watching that industrial sauna working. One of the things I've wanted to do since the new patch is start using volcanoes to purify salt water in a boiler that feeds into electrolyzers/whatever else I need water for. I imagine with volcanoes you can get nonsense amounts of power out of just steam.
@FrancisJohnYT5 жыл бұрын
Using volcano's for steam power is tricky, you have two choices. Take all the power you can while the volcano is active and have nothing when it's dormant. Alternatively you try and spread out the power generation for more consistent power generation. First option is easy but of limited usefulness, second option is more useful but much harder to accomplish. Going to have to try the second option at some point, I'm swimming in volcano's on this map.

I would see about adding a steam turbine setup with a cooling room so the 125-degree rocks gets moved over and cooled to 20 degrees then gets shipped off for sand or what not to this setup then maybe that could be included into the power block part as it's cooling loop as well as for the rock.

If the rock is ground up that will happen in the industrial sauna, also my power brick is going to run hot as well so no cooling there. Considering how I'm playing the map hot I'm not sure 125C rock lying about the place is going to be a problem so long as I keep it out of my core base. The joy of playing the map hot is i don't have to care about the environment. I'm going to move 100C+ petroleum about the map in regular pipes, why bother insulating it? I'm interested to see what other heat issues I can just simply ignore.

One suggestion for a slightly different boiler setup: Build it down in the oil biome, build a diamond rod (2 or 3 tiles wide, depending on the length) that touches the core magma. And then use the steeldoor to transfer the heat from the diamond rod into a diamond boiling/conversion champer. The counterflow part stays the same. That is much simpler, diamond costs nothing and no driller, no automation required (except one temp sensor that toggles the door). Eventually you will cool down the core magma to much so that is solidifies, but that will take 10000+ cycles, so no worrys there...
@FrancisJohnYT5 жыл бұрын
I have though about that in the past but it's pretty tricky. Even with the diamond rod the local heat draw causes the local tiles to solidify and the temp transfer with the surrounding magma goes way down at that point. The joy of the volcanic design is it never ever needs maintenance. A magma core design can net you maybe 5-10 hundred cycles. Volcanic is forever. But give it a shot and let me know how it works out, there is multiple solutions to every problem in this game.
@gaharmun5 жыл бұрын
@@FrancisJohnYT I did build it. I put 3 oil wells (10kg/s) through it for 800 cycles so far and the magma temperature touching the diamond tiles is 1549°C... It started at 1650°C ish, i think and it solidifies at 1410°C so there are a few more cycles in it... (more than i intent to play the map, probably) apart from the initial heat up phase, the heat consumption is really not that big.
@gaharmun5 жыл бұрын
btw: if you make the boiling chamber one tile wide instead of two, the pressure damage that happens when heating to fast (or too slow) is mitigated. The damage does not actually come from the created petroleum but from the unconverted crude oil that somehow got compressed by the petroleum into a single tile with thousands of kgs pressure (This game has "interesting" fluid mechanics :-) ). As far as i can tell, this does not happen if the boiling chamber is only one tile wide

Not sure if that made sense.

@@FrancisJohnYT I don't think that's what I meant. Let me try it this way. You have what I'd call a primary vertical shaft of insulated tiles in the primary tank where the volcano is on the left side. To the right, on the 3rd cell over you placed your first set of 5 ladders going down. What if you made the vertical insulated tile section, to the left of the ladders, 2 tiles thick so it pushed the magma further to the right? Do you think that would create more pressure? It would make the primary magma tank, where the volcano is, smaller, which might push the magma through your blade.
