Oath of the Open Sea (Paladin) Build Guide in D&D 5e - HDIWDT

My first 5e character was an Paladin, Oath of Anchients, Pole arm master, Sentinal. Loved that character and if you look at the oaths tenets it works perfictly if you role play him as Santa Clause. Yes Santa Clause, a big barrel chested human with white beard, a great big grin and a deep chest laugh, and he laughed a lot. Nothing bothered him and aways tried for a peacefull solution solution first until you ran into his Glave. My Newist character is a Paladin, Oath of the Open Sea. Lvl 2 Bronze dragonborn. I thought of Trition but it was just to obvious a choice, Aasimar but it was just to close of a association to the gods. I want to insert vaugeness in my characters for unknow progression. I went with Dragonborn had the right ballace for the theme of the game I was in. Not having the obvious connetions to the "Gods" or the "Lawful Good" trope, (or to water as with Trition). Is where I like my character to be. I also took a Dark Secret from VRGtR of having and unknow Echo. Again to add more unknown paths of this character. Oath of the Open Seas can play into the Chaotic side of Alignment as well as touch into the Evil. As long as your doing it in the name of freedome. And that can be interperted in so many ways. Type Free into a Thesauorus. I can see smuggling as being an optional big part of this characters arc. I like the class options options up to 8th level. But I'm open to MC into Fighter, or Bard or both. (or Sorc, Warlock, or Barbarisn if thats where the game goes) I like the Elquence Bard 3rd level ability Unsettling Words; reducing the next Saving Throw with your Bardic dice. Thats good at high level combat. (and yes our last game went to 1-20, we plan on the same) And Silver Tougue, This is a build that can start of revolution in a represive kingdome. A lets free the slaves of the Red wizards of Thay kind of story arc. I dont have a real good personality for this character yet. I have the image of Russel Crow in Master and Commander. I've normally go with Loony Tunes characters. Yosemitie Sam for a Fighter Rouge i had, Fog Horn Leg Horn for a Barbarian, It will come.

Interesting i focused on mobility and versatility with my OSP(unintentional shout out, love Red). Currently 13 levels paladin/4 swords. Harengon Fighting style Defense Dueling Slasher feat Mobile Fighting initiate: blind fighting Go to move is spirit shroud plus fury of the tides, best friend is a barbearian and grappled with the grappler feat. We're a nasty combo

This may be a Hot Take. But I don't Like the Custom Lineage. Mechanically it is powerful. But for RP reasons it is too much of a blank slate. When i pick a race for my character, I spend a lot of time looking up the lore of the race. I want to give them a reason why they are an adventurer. Do they have the same believes as the rest of their race or did they break the mold? When someone picks Custom Lineage, it just feel like they picked it because they wanted to make a "Super Powerful Awesome Character"

I understand what you're saying. The idea here is that it IS a blank slate like the Champion Fighter for example. You aren't pigeon holed into any one thing but can instead make it anything you want. Or you can be a mixed race of two that aren't currently accommodated for in the rules. Half Tiefling half Duergar could be expressed as one or the other or you can do this instead and pick a feat that fits with whatever that characters crazy culture would mean.
