No doubt there's some overlap there, but I think many aren't the same people. Also context matters. Like not deodorizing and idolizing Obama being that he was a war criminal came up more often in liberal circles than it did for Trump because those same people were so eager to call it out for Trump already so it wasn't something they needed to hear about him, not because I give trump a pass or anything. Like when libs would say "Trump's immigration policy is bad because he put kids in cages" I would point out who actually ordered those cages built and that Obama caged immigrant children in mass numbers too. Trump was just worse for splitting up the families and losing the kids, but he didn't invent the caging.

Even though I didn't dribble that wild nonsense, I just want to apologise to everyone for the egotism of my comment that (and I should have realised this before I said anything) tried to "challenge" whether Obama should be celebrated. There's a time and a place, that wasn't it. What's pointed out here is something I authentically do understand. Thanks for the video, Sunn, and thanks for (frustratedly, no doubt) humbling those of us who should have known better.

Might don't make right. There is a day of reckoning. 😢🙏🏾🕊⚡️ Yahsua Ha'Mashiach was the most powerful man that ever walked the earth; yet he never took one life. Matthew 26:51And, behold, one of them which were with Yahsua stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. 52Then said Yahsua unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. 53Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels. No , Barack Obama had no power, As all that came before him, he was just a puppet on a string. How young was JFK when his strings were clipped? Don't get it twisted there are things in heaven and earth that cannot be fathomed. Praying for it soon all to be over. 😢🙏🏾🕊⚡️ Sad how this wicked world calls wickedness power.

To quote FD Signifier, another black educator, on Obama: "Are you going to tell an 85 year old black man who experienced the civil rights movement first hand that his favorite president, the realization of a life-long aspiration, is a war criminal? Are you going to tell a family in Somalia that lost a loved one to a drone attack that he’s not? Two things can be true at once, it's a phrase that I need to put on the shirt at this point. I both admire the totality of Obama's image and accomplishments maneuvering white supremacy and recognize the damage that he did and the ways in which his image is weaponized against marginalized black people who aren't as lucky as I was."

Yup. Grew up in the Obama years to become a teen. Saw in front of my eyes the violence in my country escalate to horrific levels due the US meddling. Bombs going off became a thing you expected sometimes. I heard a few too. I personally was never hurt but the fear was always there. My dad talked about being traumatized when his friend was blown up by a bomb, he says there was only his leg left to bury when they got to the site. For people not in the US, it's hard to see how helpful Obama was during the time for the US population. I guess with hindsight I can. To me it's yet another president who falls in line behind capital, to it's inevitable march towards enriching the few at the expense of any1 who doesn't comply

I think that we have to juggle with the fact that people can be good but still do evil things because no one is perfect. I'd hope that if President Obama is called up on war crimes so is every living president because they too committed war crimes. History isn't clean, the victor can also be the monster and wrestling with that is something historians have been attempting to do from the moment we started recording our thoughts into written words. To put it simply President Obama is apart of history and apart of our history as black people. And it is ok to have feelings about his policies but still give him his flowers for being the first black man to be President. With that said I love that soup story

"As a family, I loved the 'class' the Obamas brought." Thats what many racist white people hated about the Obama most. The Obamas brought that idealistic image of an American President and his family to the WH only glaring problem was that he they were black and that sent a lot of white and white adjacent people's blood pressure sky rocketing. Such excessively weak and spineless manhood amongst so many white men and women across the country that they absurdly attacked former POTUS Obama's manhood and his wife 's femininity and womanhood viciously and maliciously in ridiculously ludicrous attempts to soothe their own milksop fragile characters.

How the hell are we supposed to learn from the past/passed😉 if we are only taught the 'comfortable' bits? It automatically removes the concept of learning, and growing - both of which can be uncomfortable! And if it isn't, are we _really_ challenging ourselves, our biases, preconceptions, and flat out flawed education/s? Is 'History' going to become an elective? 'This course is for cishet, white, 'Christian,' males' and this one is for 'Queer, POC, secular, females,' etc., etc.? And to _legislate_ against "discomfort" 🤦🏻‍♀️ ... no wonder that, both literally and figuratively, the World is burning 💔

Honestly never heard of this story before, but from a quick search it seems that some claim Michelle to be born as 'Michael', making her AMAB (Assigned Male At Birth) and in this case a trans woman, not a trans man (as said in the video). I assume it's just the case here that trans man / trans woman are being switched up accidentally, or I'm just really confused... XD

It wasn't a "mistake" on my part... I'm quoting what some of THEM said. Those are not MY words. I know the difference between transman and transwoman. They call Michelle a "transman" because they're transphobic and think of transgender women as men. Of course, it doesn't make sense... because they're jack*sses.

It's NOT an accident. HOW are y'all ignoring the fact that I'm quoting racist transphobes who call transgender women "men??" Like, I even put some of their ignorant comments on the screen for reference. What's confusing? Transphobes say Michelle Obama is transgender and they call her a "man."

My problem with Obama is not unique to Obama, all presidents since 1948 have been complicit in the genocide of Palestinians and crushing of revolutions and national liberation movements. That being said, it's a massive deal when he got elected, it suggests a significant change in American politics and history, it's something to be proud of, even if it's not the end of racism or anywhere near.

As a white person trying to do better, I have a question for you. I respect your opinions and insight and I feel you would be a good person to ask. I am a direct descendant of the Wyatt's who owned Boxley plantation since the early 1600s. The father of my adult children is a direct descendant of slaves. I am very proud of the fact my ancestors would be disgusted and disown me. I'm also a member of the alphabet community so there's that, too. Anyways, when arguing with white supremacists, I like to throw out the fact that my genetics are probably more "pure" than theirs but I got my tubes tied after having 2 biracial children and I laugh about having denied their cause anymore "pure" genetics. I'm pretty sure you're not going to appreciate how I say that. I'd like to remind you it's something I use ONLY when dealing with fucktards who consider my genetics supreme. I do not feel as though they are. So my question is... How can I make this argument in a way that doesn't make ME sound like a supremacist. Like I didn't used to think anything about it until I was met with people who were mad about it in the first place. Yes, I'm fully prepared for you to slam me in some way about the way I presented my question on a video and actually look forward to learning how I can change my language or thought patterns, but would you at least include a genuine answer? Thank you.

I disagree with this one. The analogy in particular falls short in this regard, that the different factions that oppose Obama are analogous to a family with each of its members having a specific criticism of the cook's soup. It would be more accurate, for example, to label a racist as an outsider and not part of the family. Criticisms from within the family, likewise, are not always in good faith and can be meant as a way to play Judas within the family. However, good faith critiques from within the family and welcomed guests should always be listened to. Not everyone's opinion is equal, that includes the anti black muslim homosexual who married a man being very well reflective of outsiders and Judas family members. Obama was a war criminal. I am Kenyan, a retelling of African history would include acknowledge Jomo Kenyatta but I would certainly not be above calling him a neo colonial puppet.

You are the soup. What would be left of You if all the aspects other people don't like were removed? History is the soup. What would be left if all the aspects that other people don't like were removed? The person who embodies the office of POTUS is not a unilateral despot with unlimited power and authority. POTUS must workin with a system of people all needing each other's support to function. The system is only as good as the people who wield the majority of authority within it. And each of those people are the soup

@kiritugeorge4684
@kiritugeorge4684 6 ай бұрын
@@sunnmcheaux But surely sunn you have to agree that it would be the correct way to talk about Obama during black history month. I'm fine with it being called a preferred narrative but the truth is approaching Obama with neutrality rather than objectivity and calling said objectivity subjective is quite dangerous. Speaking on America, Black people have made history for all manner of reasons in the United States, not all the reasons are good. Their achievements being historic are in and of themselves the end goal but an assessment of the impact of their achievements is. That is, tie the historical achievements of the individual to the wider historical process society was undergoing. The same criticisms can be levied against other historic political moments like VP Charles Curtis and his role in the destructive assimilation policies inflicted on Native Americans. But if you want to place narratives like mine on the same plane as that of racists and say on that basis its all subjective then that's fine. I still love your videos and how informative they are. However, by you saying what I said is accurate, I hope you then know that its not just about differing narratives and that ascertaining objective, non neutral stances on Obama is not just possible but necessary. Nonetheless, I do also in turn appreciate where you are coming from with this. The fact that indeed a significant barrier was broken in the racial politics of the United States is huge and there can be a want to highlight this without other "distracting" matters. In simple terms, regardless of how evil Obama was, he still did something that can never be taken away from black people, taking the white house. This is a long ass response so apologies if you've made it this far but if you still wish to reject what I have said that's fine. Its a little hurting from someone as prestigious and informative as you but its fine.

I think Sunn's point is that - Obama existed and was nominated as a candidate on that day. For those reasons alone, it was a momentous occasion for black people. Hence, it is a part of black history. The video spoke *only* of his nomination and grammy. It did not attempt a nuanced political critique on the presidency.

So will you tell black historical facts about Anthony Johnson? Or does it not align with your feelings lol Anthony Johnson was a black slave who was released from his servitude, he was legally recognized as a "free Negro." He became a successful farmer. In 1651, he owned 250 acres (100 ha) and the services of five indentured servants (four white and one black). Anthony was the fist slave owner in the United States. He owned 4 white and 1 black slave as I said before. Your turn.....

Can you please explain how a former US slave became the first person to own a slave? Wouldn’t the people who owned Anthony Johnson been first?
@evapunk522
@evapunk522 5 ай бұрын
@@geraldingraham4948 I assume OP misspoke, but Anthony Johnson wasn't technically a "slave" the same way that history likes to categorize them. He was an African brought over through the Atlantic Slave trade, but he was never meant to be kept as a slave for life. He was essentially an indentured servant who was freed through the normal process of how all indentured servants were freed, whether they are black or white. Also, the "slaves" he kept were also indentured servants until the one black servant tried to leave servitude at his appointed time and he was refused to do so by Anthony. Apparently there was a court case that ruled against that slave in favor of Anthony, thus setting a judicial precedent that black "servants" can now be slaves for life. So...technically, Anthony Johnson's actions were detrimental to his own race, but no one ever said all black people are perfect..same as every other race.
@geraldingraham4948
@geraldingraham4948 5 ай бұрын
@@evapunk522 1.) History doesn’t have “likes” in regards to categorizing. He was a kidnapped African whom in American fashion of the day was stripped of his African name. Or does Anthony sound African to you? He was a slave since indentured servitude was the price for the trip to the US and he got his ride for free. Now not all slavery was in perpetuity at the time and the first person to own a slave in perpetuity was Hugh Gwyn (Google is free). So Anthony Johnson being the first slaver in America is a white supremacy myth. 2.) Let’s say for arguments sake he was the first slaver in the US. (Spain had African slaves in the US since 1520). Does it change the fact that the Atlantic slave trade was an exercise in white supremacy? Does it make more palatable the fact that all the founding fathers and about 30% of the US population, 99% of whom were white; owned slaves? Does it mean white ppl DIDN’T invent the idea of skin color based race and set up a hierarchical system oppressing others they deemed inferior? Does it mean Jim Crow didn’t happen? How about thousands of lynched black ppl or destroyed towns and neighborhoods? What part of history does Anthony Johnson’s existence refute…exactly?
