I remember around 20 years ago the insurance companies were dying to get access to a vehicle's ECM after accidents. Surprisingly it got shot down by the government as privacy issues. So their legal loophole was to make it voluntary. So they came up with the "safe drive" devices to low jack your car. Basically shaving a few bucks off your premiums to gain access to your drivind habits through the computer. So this OBD3 sounds like final nail if implemented.
@AcuraLvR829 күн бұрын
Safe Drive devices have backfired spectacularly in the face of insurance companies. Most those devices, specifically Progressive Snap Shot, wreaks hell on a vehicle's ecu and electrical system. Many years ago I swapped a 4 cyl Cummins diesel into my 2000 Dodge Durango, along with a 5 speed manual. It got 28-30mpg with the diesel, and would have been even better if I swapped differential gears, while the 360 got less than half that. It pulled trailers better than the 360 I pulled out. It was easier to work on- which I really never had to do, in 3 years and 30k+ miles all I had to do was fluid and filter changes. I had to sell it because my state (New Hampshire) changed the way it performed emissions inspections, so it would no longer pass. I had to sell it to a buyer in Florida who didn't have emissions inspections. How ironic that the 14mpg 360 would have been legal, but the 30mpg diesel wasn't.

I have both an extensive background in computers and the import tuning segment of car culture. No matter what technology they wish to implement, there will always be security flaws and ways around the things you mention. Also, the nanny state encroaching on cars in general is making lots of people get rid of their newer vehicles in favor of 90s to mid 2000's stuff. Vehicles that are not only more reliable and easier to fix, but wont taddle-tale on you to Lexis Nexis if u go a few mph over the speed limit, or slam your brakes to avoid a deer. I also don't like direct injection causing dirty intake valves, plastic valve covers or oil pans, CVT transmissions and small displacement engines with turbos that don't last for as many miles as a naturally aspirated engine and I don't trust the thin zero weight oils. 5w-30 is as thin as I trust. If a car uses an oil that's thinner than 5w-30 I don't want the car.

While I am against government overreach, I live in SC. The squatted truck ban is a good thing. The issue was safety. I believe two people have been killed because the driver couldn't see the car in front of them. People in motorsports often complain about dumb safety rules. The head of the AHRA stated almost all of these rules have been written in blood. So, enjoy your day 😊

Here's the thing - your mobile phone that you are most likely watching this video on, can already do this and is spying on you constantly, in and out of your vehicle 24/7.

bold of you to think i have my phone turned on in my truck (i have also stripped out all but the FM antenna), and my phone still has a removable battery and I just keep modding the OS to keep it up to date I keep my tech just modern enough AT HOME and on the go I use paper and/or CDs

@David-jt9nt good for you! I'd wager you are amongst a pretty small minority of people who have the wherewithal to do such things. A vast majority of people now go about their lives with either an unmodified apple or android device with permanent batteries strapped to them 24/7 like a bodily appendage.

I run several Fords from the 1980's, and the OBDI ECV-IV system wasn't as simple as some may think. The o2 sensor and EGR systems aren't merely for emissions, but rather are part of the way the ECM runs the motor, and problems or poor deletions of both can cause running issues. Once you get into SEFI those sensors aren't merely there for emissions, you have a complicated enough system that it requires a lot of information to run it correctly.

“Red Barchetta” by Rush. Always thought it was a song based on a crazy sci-fi idea of the future… which it kind of was. But here we are. Stuff like this always reminds me of this song…

Rush is my favorite band. I immediately thought about this song. Which by the way is based on short story by Richard Foster in 1973 "A Nice Morning Drive". Published in the November 1973 Issue of Road and Track. It's getting scary out here. One of my favorite songs, based in a dystopian future is coming true.

9:50 exactly. The cops did the same thing with tinted windows that came from the factory then the local cops give tickets to you for fun for something the factory put on knowing we would have this problem/fines. Blamed it on drive by shootings in los Angeles in the late 80s.

This is absolutely here, whether we want to believe it or not. I checked insurance companies for lower rates and every single one of them wanted me to plug in their spy ware technology to monitor my driving. I said hell no. But it's here. Progressive snapshot and the like.

I remember reading discussions in Car Craft or Hot Rod back in the late 90s about the coming introduction of OBD2 . The government wanted it to include vehicle tracking. Does anyone what happened with this? Google seems to have gone very quiet on the subject. As for me, i want nothing more than the OBD that was on my 94 Dakota, thanks.

Technology cost too much for it. You'd have a GPS tracker connecting to a GPS satellite, then a telephone box in your car that would send the GPS coordinates over. All of that cost over a thousand dollars. Now the cheapest smartphone from 10 years ago will do the entire job.

Actually I think even in the case or lease or loan, they can solve for it via requiring a certain level of insurance, so even in those cases it is not needed.

Even OBD2 can snitch on you... I remember reading a column back in the day in Sport Compact Car magazine, where a guy in like a 1998 Trans Am got convicted of manslaughter when he sped in a residential area and t-boned someone backing out of their driveway, killing the person instantly. He said he was doing the speed limit and that the car backed out of nowhere. The forensics team picked up the ECU from his car as evindence for the case, and what the guy didn't know was that GM pretty much implemented a "black box" type function in their ECUs that records the last seconds of data in a collision. It was found that the guy was doing like 100mph, full throttle and never touched the brakes. IIRC, I think the article ended by saying the guy wanted to appeal because GM never disclosed to him that it had such a feature when he bought the car... I don't know how that case concluded!

I mean doing 100 in a residential neighborhood resulting in a fatal crash you kinda get what you deserve and I'm not inclined to feel sorry for you

Stop buying new vehicles. Buy all the older vehicles and put them on the road. There are millions of older cars sitting around just waiting to be used.
@jimalton15648 күн бұрын
Have you seen the price of old vehicles now? I live in the rust belt, so buying anything over 10 years old means it's going to be a rusty pile, and the price is going to be about 3x what it's worth. I dream of living in the southwest where I can still get an old vehicle that will last more than 5 more years.

The masses don’t care and embrace this stuff with open arms because the masses embrace convenience. Most people buy a car and don’t own it for more than 7 years and buy a new one. And in between just take them to shops for oil changes and small repairs. Working on cars isn’t a convenience nor appeals to the masses
