In this basic intro to OBD2 we go through the basics, data logging, PIDs and more!
OBD (On Board Diagnostics) is the vehicle's self-diagnostic system. It allows for a standardized method for accessing various data, diagnostic trouble codes and more from cars, medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. In practice, the OBD2 protocol allows a mechanic to use e.g. an OBD2 scanner or code reader to identify the underlying issues behind a lit malfunction indicator light (MIL). But OBD2 is also relevant as a source of real-time vehicle data for use in e.g. fleet management, fuel optimization, CAN sniffing and more.
In this video and the article, we in particular focus on the data logging part of OBD2 - how is a message structured, what is an OBD query / request vs. a response message, what are OBD2 PIDs and much more. We do so through concrete examples like Vehicle Speed and RPM to make it easy to understand.

Why are most scanners that have bidirectional capabilities so expensive? Doesn't it work on the same standard? What is the device used in-between, say, a PC or tablet and the car? I get the gist of a reader, but a lot of bidirectional scan tools use a wireless module not much bigger than a standalone reader. What hardware is in this module that allows bidirectional capabilities?

Too many mechanics now 'rely' on ECU data output. "There's no codes set, so there's nothing wrong with the vehicle." Bollocks! Do what your job title says. If all that was required was to read the codes, then anybody could do it. It's when the vehicle is acting up and the ECU isn't seeing a sensor fault that they need to get down and dirty to find the actual problem. Recently we had a starting issue. 6 mechanics read the computer and said there was nothing wrong with the car. Yet they all agreed that it was too hard to start. Eventually I started looking into it myself. We'd had a service done on it and one of the items changed was the in-tank fuel filter. I pulled the filter and low-and-behold, the pump pickup pipe 'o' ring seal was broken. It was damaged as the pump was slid into the new filter. It was allowing air to be sucked up, and that was the cause of the hard starting. And there's no sensor there, so the ECU couldn't see it. Mechanics, do your job! The computer should be just the first step (as opposed to the only one) in fixing the problem. If there's no codes, at least you know what the problem isn't. Now start looking elsewhere....

Yes Chris I agree. Not all faults are captured by OBD. It is upto OEM to decide which faults needs to be populated.

It's an interesting point Chris. It's definitely hard to remove the human interaction from the equation :-) at the same time, it'll be interesting to see how machine learning may play a role going forward. One could imagine that even if a single ECU is not present for a particular fault, the pattern across the other ECUs will correctly identify the error - backing up your case with data even when there's "none".

I went to college for automotive right out of high school back in "04" but decided a year and a half into the program that I only liked to work on my own vehicle so I quit and worked an unrelated field. 14 years later (9months ago) out of work and needing to do something I was offered an automotive job. I took it figuring something was better then nothing till something better to come along. In doing so I quickly realized that I again love it and actually would rather work on all vehicles but my own. Lol I don't know what changed my feeling about it probably just maturity and life experience. Being excited about working automotive again I quickly realized my desire to go back and finish my last half year of education. Moral of the story is back in "04" where I received the majority of my education obd2 was still a relatively new development and was thought of as a great aid in helping to diagnose. But a tool was all that it was no different then any other tool in the tool box. Now having gone back to school I have to agree with you that many/most think of a scantool as a solution with no consideration of how to proceed if the screen doesn't tell them exactly what to do next. They think of it as a scansolution instead of a scantool which is ridiculous because when such a tool exists their job will no longer be necessary. I'm sorry for your bad experience with a tech. Your story motivates me to continue learning and to have understanding of all systems and how they work (that's what brought me to this video) whether a computer tells me what's wrong or not in hope of never having a similar comment written about myself.

I'm glad you fixed your problem yourself. If the technician whom looked at your vehicle was a certified A-Tech the first thing he would've looked at with a hard start would have been 1. Fuel Pressure; 2 Fuel Trim Data. According to what you stated that the O-ring Seal was broken and sucking in air would have created a fuel vapor in your fuel rail system leaning your Air Fuel Ratio significantly. You didn't mention the type of vehicle but If your vehicle uses a Oxygen Sensor Fuel Trim PID's would be traceable and if it uses a modern Air/Fuel Ration Sensor then it would've been even more precise. I'm sorry to hear that all of these techs weren't able to find your problem but I hope you truly took your vehicle to a certified tech. Also a vehicle sensor only points in the direction of a malfunction and because a check engine lamp may be on it does NOT deem the sensor at fault. A great example is a Oxygen Sensor may set the Service Engine Lamp but the sensor may be fully functional stating that your car could be running too lean or too rich and this is why it set, therefore the sensor did its job. I hope this helps in clarifying how OBDII data pids really help a tech even if the check engine lamp may not be on. A good note for all techs to check first is the freeze frame data to see when the event occurred. It gives valuable info such as speed, rpm, temperature, etc; I hope this helps.

Can you clarify what you mean here? If the access to the CAN bus is blocked via the OBD2 connector, you'd basically need to hook into the CAN bus behind the OBD2 connector - though this is more cumbersome.

I'm not sure if you'd be able to use a standard OBD2 scanner for most motorcycles, to my knowledge they're not required to support OBD2 in the way non-EV vehicles are. However, we've got plenty of two-wheeler users that record the raw CAN bus data from their motorcycles, e-scooters, e-bikes etc. - see e.g. our Case Studies section for a use case with Zero Motorcycles.

It'll have an OBD1 system, since it's pre-1996, which is much less detailed than the system described here.

You'll probably have a hard time getting data from your vehicle. In our experience, even cars as recent as mid 2000s will have far less data than those from 2010-15+ when it comes to standard Mode 01 PIDs

Yes, assuming that your car satisfies the requirements outlined in the video in terms of age etc. As outlined, not all cars support all OBD2 parameters - but you can request the Supported PID messages to get insight into e.g. which Mode 01 parameters are supported (if you're interested in e.g. vehicle speed, RPM etc.)

Autel MaxiSys is a decent one for the money though the price range starts at $1250.00+ compared to a Snapon Verus retailing for $10,000.00. If you want to look at data other than just codes you will need a decent scanner. Nothing cheaper is fast enough to really catch the hickups in faults. Also try purchasing an oscilloscope to view waveforms and for injectors and coils as well a fuel RPM and more. Scopes are a must have now these days with OBD / CAN network PIDs

My guess is that, if the music were not there, you and I would never have found this video. That's why all these most popular videos have music. It keeps the part of the brain that says "I'm bored, change the channel" occupied a bit longer, which causes Google's algorithm to rate such videos higher. The same video without music would be better, of course, but we'd never even be allowed to find it.

At times some mechanics can be blinded by all the data that's presented to them on a code reader. Causing them to over think the problem and miss the blatantly obvious issue that 90% of the time right in front of there eyes. Also Bear in mind tho that todays vehicles can be extremely complex to work on and diagnose faults on. Most people believe that it is simply a case of plugging a computer in and being told the fault. But alot of the time it really isn t that simple.

Keep trying with it. All cars now have it and it is a good thing. This 'tutorial' is poor in that it does not introduce things properly. So forget this one, Try something else.

They don't want us fixing our own cars anymore. Half the time the OBD diagnostics give you the wrong info anyway.

There are screens on the car, and there are computers on the car. Why do you need special tools to access the codes? The car manufacturers just divide features into different MCUs and we can't use the center touch console to look at a simple error code. It's just utterly stupid.
