A dry 1:1 comparison of the SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II virtual Oberheim VST AU software synth to an Oberheim OB-X Rev.2.
Both the OB-X and the OP-X PRO-II were recorded 100% dry and unprocessed over an RME Fireface UC - the OB-X over the line inputs and the OP-X PRO-II via optical cable over the optical S/PDIF-input. What you hear is the pure 24-bit recording. Of course there unfortunately will be some compression artefacts from KZbin.

Obererheim OB-X Rev. 2 with 6 voices installed
The exact detunings (deviating filter settings, warm up pitch drift, etc.) and the individual pan settings of the voices of OB-X have been copied voice by voice in every detail with the voice-based tuning features of OP-X PRO-II for a perfect match to the real synth.
To copy the bright sound OP-X PRO-II uses the BRL (brilliant) filter setting (DMP button, second button above voice mutes in the synth interface) which is dedicated to copy the sound character of the early OB-X and allows the filter to open into the ultra sound area and adds some extra shine in the heights.

The featured OB-X is a six voice model (maximum was 8) and it has a lot of detunings going on because of all the wirings and dicreete voltage controlled components which gives the synth a very lively and organic sound.

Agreed! I was forever sad that I let my beloved OB-8 go in 1992 for $1500 because I was moving across country, and never realized how coveted and valuable they would become. Now that I have this amazing plugin, I don’t miss the OB-8 anymore - it truly sounds identical! In my laptop, no less! Amazing!

@@jptaylor Wow John you got 1.5k for your OB-8 in 1992 seriously? Way to go man 👍 In 1990 my Jupiter 8 with MD/8 midi interface and Anvil ATA case sat for a month in the Los Angeles recycler classifieds before finally fetching $450.00. Last week I checked eBay for giggles and there were 2 with asking prices of over 30k! lol! To me this whole crazy modern analog thing is like the emperor has no clothes .. lol, young guys (and even a few veterans) are psyched into thinking nothing software related can touch a real hardware analog synth in sound quality .. but those of us who’ve been there done that back in the day when all we had were these big back breaking analog polysynth behemoths know better ehh 😬👍 Only thing we’re missing are all the knobs .. but seriously how many knobs on your OB-8 were you turning at a gig? .. personally for me with my Jupiter 8 the number was zero .. all the knob turning was at home coming up with new patches for our songs. To my ears in this video demo the sounds are almost verbatim, the eq on the hardware is a little more scooped .. if he scooped the software’s eq a smidge it would be virtually identical .. what do you think?

OP-X PRO-II does a great job. The legendary hardware still costs like 5000€. The software gives everybody possibilities of the famous Oberheim synthesizer.

5000€? Na, these prices still were many years ago. The last OB-X I saw on ebay was € 20'000 - I guess in the meantime it's even more. Even OB-Xa and OB-8 are more than €10'000. You probably mean the new reissue OB-X8 from Tom Oberheim which is around $5000. But the old originals are way more expensive.

All you guys need to do is create different GUIs example ( prophet 5 mode and Jupiter 8 mode) those patches sound great as well . I do have the real things but this plug-in still reigns supreme

I heard more low end in the real thing. I also think while tweaking the filter some difference may be more noticeable. But the VST sounds great tho, I would buy it.

I've been using the Pro-ii for years and love it. Getting a Hydrasynth Deluxe next week and would love for this software to be ported to iOS for bluetooth control. Or how about adding MPE capability? Just a hopeful request :)

This is a known bug in Live Windows only. Simply use the VST2 version instead which should be listed in VST if you installed the VST2 version into the directory Live looks for VST plugns. In other hosts (also in Live Mac) the VST3 version doesn't have this bug. In Mac we however generally recommend to use the AU version.

Nah, the real thing somehow sounds more alive. Software is a bit plastic, soulless. But I am sure the software version is much more handy for a studio producer.

Not by much. Considering the VST first off is like 12 years old, and it uses virtually no CPU. Where it fails is where all VSTs do fail, is in the Dynamic Range, and I assume this is where the CPU comes into play. All in all the thing sounds better by a long shot than any of the other OB clones out there, and has some amazing hidden options that seems even Arturia is starting to steal like the "hidden" tuning and pan buttons. Now don't get me wrong though, I will be buying the UBXA when it hits the market, but I can't imagine its that much better than this!

@@lorenmorgan1931 UBXA seems to be based on OB-Xa which is very different to OBX. OBX is full discrete voicecards with only CEM3310 EGs. OB-Xa is fully CEM based with a switchable filter. I think Uli will base his clone on newly cloned CEM chips he is in process of producing. I dont think he will base it on Alfa clones. It would const him a lot more. We yet to see good UBXA would sound when mass produced.

The plugin’s shortcomings are typical of most VA; the filter behavior at high resonance especially in the low mid region of the sweep, the high harmonic content of the oscillators when the filter is open especially in the contra octave, and it’s missing some of that sweet thick randomness when osc 2 is detuned, although OP-X gets closer than most. I also wish he would let some of the longer sounds decay more before switching to the other synth. Still a fantastic plugin today though, and a huge part of the reason I now own an OB-8.

@Raymondo666 They sound close, but not the same. I have played the new OBX8 and I can tell you that the real analog has a little more depth to it. EIther way, this is still the best clone out there, and confused why you think that I said differently? I have been a huge supporter of this product and probably helped them sell quite a few licenses.
