That's a misconception. Serj actually became, and still is, a much better singer after he left soad by conventional singing standards. His vocal range and vibrato improved greatly as he focused on a cleaner singing style. Unfortunately, this clean singing style doesn't really work with soad songs although I still enjoy it. He abandoned growling and belting notes loudly which he made liberal use of in soad songs; this is because using those techniques would damage his voice at his current age. Still, if we got a new soad album, his voice would probably sound really good as the music would cater to his new style.
