Huell Howser, our friend and longtime colleague here at KCET, has passed away at the age of 67. He had recently announced his retirement. Huell was one of a kind - a down-home folksy voice bringing us the hidden treasures of California for three decades.
He will be greatly missed.

Enthusiasm! That's what made Huell so compelling. He was CONTAGIOUS with it !! Made us proud to be Californians. Found the "gold" in all of us. Go, and do likewise in his memory.

When I was a little girl I'd watch California Gold with my mom in the living room or in her bedroom. Huell was so great. He showed a poor, troubled girl a bit of the world. We travelled together, I feel....and I don't know. I just wish that, in the back of my head, I could think he was alive, enjoying retirement. But I can't. He was liked, loved and everything in between. Thanks for the smiles and laughter Huell.

Huell always made going back to work on Mondays a little easier to take as we watched him every Sunday night. Actually met him in 2003 at the San Diego Wild Animal Park while he was doing a follow up story on an elephant trainer. A real gentleman.

THAT man and his wacky adventures always made me smile.....he was like an old friend that would drop into our living room and entertain us with his outrageous enthusiasm about his quirky adventures. I guess that is why I cried when I learned that he had passed. Our out of control world needs more Huell Howsers.....RIP

When I first moved to California, Mr. Howser introduced me to all the state had to offer with his wonderful programs. No matter how small the place he may have been visiting, his exuberance made it a big adventure. Sad news.

I met Huel Howser at my diner I used to work at. I served him French fries. He was really the sweetest person you'd ever meet. I honor and miss him with all my heart. I grew up watching Californias gold as a kid until adulthood. He showed me places I thought i'd never see..

RIP Huell, you are an icon. I will personally miss you. I never met you but feel I have known you for years. As we grow older we lose the people who make up our lives, you were a part of my life during the period of my children growing up. You gave my children and me a view on California and life here that was a joy to watch and participate in. When someone out of my past dies, a piece of me dies as well. God bless you Huell.

I knew so very little about California when first my husband & I moved here. Over the years, after viewing Huell's presentations, I came to know & genuinely love this state & it's history in a way I never would have without Huell. All the positive tours, cultures, & words spoken were the most pleasurable we have ever seen. He encouraged our senses of adventure & prompted our explorations in ALL directions. What a contribution this man has made!! His Hollywood handsomeness, enthusiastic personality, & sincere enjoyment of life spilled over into so many of our lives. How could one NOT love such a beautiful state after listening to Huell?

I will always miss Huell. When the show was on "California's Gold" or one of them, it was a late Sunday afternoon or early Sunday evening. it was the end of the weekend in Southern CA. But before dreading Monday, Huell took us on a fun visit of one of California's treasures. And I SO WISH KCET or whoever would sell his DVDs --- why are they so hard to find now? There are so many more I want.
