Heinrici's ability to estimate when the Soviets would attack was a skill he'd put to use many times as the Germans had retreated back to the west . Using his fingerspitzengefühl , most usefully translated as gut feeling , he would hold the front line till the last moment then retire his forward units to secondary defensive positions just before the artilllery barrage fell on empty positions , thus minimizing casualties in that phase of the attack. They would reoccupy those positions when the barrage move on , to meet ensuing infantry attack . His command at Seelow explains why Zukhov's massed artillery failed to hand him a walkover there. He was Germany's master of the defensive battle .

Most of the tanks that Muncheberg had were Panthers. Anecdotal but i read a account describing the Wehrmacht at Seelow and the battle of Berlin not only as kids who just joined but were regular Wehrmacht who had managed to stay out of the war by being in Berlin the whole time, clean garrison soldiers with no combat experience either. All of them had no idea what was about to happen. Basically, only the recently arrived SS units were battle hardern.

A prudent decision would have been to stay on their land. They couldve invested all that treasure, thought, and labor into turning their land into a highly-industrialized, affluent, prosperous and peaceful world power, growing wealthier through world trade and commerce. A new car in every garage. Good pay, good trains, safe clean streets. The 1950s USA, except in the 1940s. Making the most of the rich land they had, as they do today -- instead of coveting others land, taking it and... depopulating it by various means to make extra room. Nationalism staying within the nation. It could've been good. When people take something from others by ferocious attack, it is only rational to expect ferocious opposition. A problem empires through history have is grossly *underestimating* the capability and determination of a target. The US learned that in Vietnam and to a half-hearted way in Afghanistan. Russia today learns that painful lesson too. A person should not "get high on their own supply" -- don't actually believe our own propaganda of our superiority, the craven weakness of our targets, and how "easy" it will be to take their stuff and boot them out. Pride cometh before destruction.

One of the major reasons the Germans at Seelow Heights were able to mount a defense such costly to the Soviets despite the poor state of their armies, was the Fortress cities strategy the German high command used to buy crucial time for defensive preparation. Berlin itself was actually well-within the Red army's operational striking distance after the Vistula-Oder offensive by January 1945, yet due to the orders from the German leader to declare a staggering amount of fortress cities and hold them till the last man, the Red Army soon found themselves having too much pockets behind their frontlines and had to halt and spent troops to clear at least some of them out. Not to mention most of the German divisions holding in these surrounded urban cities were broken infantry formations that managed to delay the Red Army assault far longer than it could possibly do in an open field. Meanwhile, the Germans were able to gradually set up some sort of defensive lines on Seelow right in front of the now exhausted Soviet spearhead whose resupply were affected by the numerous sieges behind it, and even managed to scoop up a few remaining panzers units as mobile reserve. While the city of Berlin eventually fell under the relentless Red army, had the many German foot infantry divisions decided retreat and not hold their ground, the Berlin defenders would unlikely to have up to 3 months time to shore up any defense, with most of the retreating Germans caught up in the much quicker follow-up Soviet offensives and Berlin might be taken with far less Soviet causalities.

One hundred thousand Germans against one million Russians. The Russians had an unbelievable number of tanks, artillery and airplanes. This was the most lopsided battle in all of history. The Germans were dislodged but the Russian losses were truly obscene. Russian losses on the Eastern front by April 1945 were between twenty five and thirty million. German losses on all fronts from 1939 to 1945 were ten million men. Yes. Russia won that war. At a terrible price.

The Seelow Heights, located approximately 90 kilometers east of Berlin, provided a formidable natural defensive position for the German forces. Yeah but that was the Seelow Heights... want us to find some hills that look more like what you hoped?

NEVER forget NEVER.
