Oh we have quite a same festival in India it’s known as Pitar in which we believe that the spirits of our ancestors come in form of crows so we prepare food for them (the spirits in form of crows).

Thank you for sharing this wonderful information on お盆. I need to ask, is お盆 particularly associated with 浄土宗 and/or 浄土真宗? And what about 禅? Do they also celebrate お盆? I learn so many new things with each day about 大乗仏教 and it gives me great joy. Thank you for everything you keep up the good work.

Thank you for your question. Actually I'm not buddhist, so I have less knowledge than those who believe in buddhism. but I hit the book, so I can answer your question. I hope it helps you! As you know there're many sects in Japan, so basically each sect has a different perspective. As for Obon, 浄土宗 and 浄土真宗 have essentially different perspective. Basically the origin of Obon is said to be 盂蘭盆会, but they think it's Kangie(歓喜会). They say お盆 is not about giving memorial services for ancestors, but the opportunity for appreciating sutra. However 浄土真宗 have nothing like so-called お盆, while 浄土宗 have some aspects of お盆 such as preparing the altar. Meanwhile, Obon of 曹洞宗 seams to be almost the same as the basic. just like I introduced in this video.

Hotoke is Buddha.
@TheJapanalyst
@TheJapanalyst 4 жыл бұрын
Hotoke is a general term of buddha, bodhisattva, etc. There're countless hotokes, so I can't answer it precisely. Considering Hotoke, there're also many types of them. On the top of them comes Nyorai(如来, Tathagata), which corresponds to buddha. Then comes bodhisattva, gods, etc. It may sound strange that there're gods in buddhism though the god in buddhism is essentially not the same as the ones in shintoism. Japanese buddhism is such complicated

Yes butsudan is for buddhism, but rather for paying respect for the deceased ancestors. that's why there's not always buddha statues, nor bodhisattva statue.indeed some have buddha statues in butsudan

90% of Japanese follow Shinto forklore and 35% of Japanese follow Buddhism. I hate to see Japanese Buddhism lose its social and spiritual traditions of Japan, after all Buddhism has countless Japanese souls including Japan's imperial family ancestors. Buddhism has been on Japanese soil since 794 A.D. and are you worried about the decreasing popularity of Japanese Buddhism?
@ayushranpise586
@ayushranpise586 4 жыл бұрын
@@dustingriffith7399 No I am not worried. How can Japanese buddhism is only 35%? Means Japanese people are leaving buddhism? Please Japanese people believe in buddhism because buddhism is very good religion. The teachings of Buddha is very good. I was also a indian hindu but then I converted to Buddhism this year 2020! Dustin griffith are you a follower of Buddha? Buddhism Japanese. Buddhism in india is increasing in 2001 census there are only 0.7% buddhist but in 2011 census there are 10.2% Buddhist buddhism is the 3rd largest religion in India. India has 2nd largest buddhist population in the world 136 million people

@@dustingriffith7399 But I think not only 35% of Japanese are Buddhist because Japanese people Pratice Buddha purely but also shinto. Is that true that shinto is taken elements of buddhism mostly?

@@dustingriffith7399 I think there is incorrect buddhism in Japan. Buddhism doesn't have gods hindu gods but in Japanese Buddhism there is hindu gods there is no CORRECT Buddhism arrival is japan,china. Buddhism in SRILANKA,THAILAND,CAMBODIA,MYANMAR, BHUTAN,INDIA IS CORRECT BUDDHISM. IN BUDDHISM THERE IS ONLY BUDDHA NOT A SINGLE BODHISATTVA OR GOD. WE SHOULD GIVE CORRECT BUDDHISM TO JAPAN,CHINA AND OTHER COUNTRIES. I THINK CHINA HAVE HALF CORRECT BUDDHISM AND HALF WRONG. BECAUSE CHINESE PEOPLE BELIEVE IN BUDDHA PURELY. BUT JAPANESE PEOPLE BELIEVE IN BUDDHA OR NOT I DON,T KNOW. IF THEY BELIEVE THEN THERE IS CORRECT BUDDHISM BUT IF THEY BELIEVE IN BODHISATTVA MOSTLY THEN THEY ARE NOT FOLLOWING BUDDHISM PROPERLY. IN BUDDHISM THERE IS ONLY BUDDHA NOT A SINGLE BODHISATTVA AND GOD. ARE YOU WORRIED?
@TheJapanalyst
@TheJapanalyst 4 жыл бұрын
Ah now i think i could see your point. The buddhism in Japan may well be clearly different from your image. That's due to the difference between Mahayana buddhism and Theravada buddhism. Japan and China follows Mahayana, that's the reason why it may appear to be strange compared to Theravada buddhism you follow. But this is another form of buddhism too. You can criticize how we believe in buddhism following Mahayana buddhism.You can say our buddhism is wrong. But this is the buddhism in Japan, with which we have been living together from long time ago.

fun fact- 'Siddharta Gautama' was a disrespectful term to address the Buddha. Only Some Brahmins and Nirgrantha monks who had a beef with Buddha used call him ' Siddharta Gautama' or 'Sakya Muni'. __ Ishan Chandra Ghosh ' Jatak tales'
