JUDITH AT THE BANQUET OF HOLOFERNES
Teresa Posada, curator of the Department of Flemish painting and Northern Schools up to 1700, comments the painting Judith at the banquet of Holofernes by Rembrandt van Rijn. The curator offers a small introduction to the work, comments its iconography and how it changed, and also gives insight on the context of dutch painting of the period.
Judith, the only work by Rembrandt in the Museo del Prado, is one of a group of depictions of goddesses and heroines by the artist painted between 1633 and 1635. It is signed and dated on the arm of the chair: Rembrant / f. 1634.
The masterful handling of chiaroscuro and the wealth of painterly nuances in the clothing and the expression of the face, make this canvas one of the finest examples of Rembrandt’s artistic genius.
