Phileas Fogg - the best and most sensual hero of all the roles of Pierce Brosnan.

Brosnan's gaze, watching from afar as they lead Aouda to the stake, is astounding!!! It can be seen that he felt a very strong feeling for her then, and not only the debt prompted him to save her. Besides, he's the only Fogg who really risked his life to save her, eventually throwing himself against the stake, compared to the 1956 version, and the complete bewilderment of Fogg's "pocket knife" from the book.

This is much better than the 2021 version in my opinion. Much closer to Verne’s amazing book. 👍

@Evelina Gotchkova the 1950s version is by far the best for me. Such a sense of innocent fun and adventure, the soundtrack is lovely, the casting great and the locations just make you want to book a holiday right away. It's very big budget with high production values, there must be thousands of extras in the Spain part.

I hate 2021 series. They made Paspartue black.I am not a racist, but come on,Paspartue is french and it's in 19th century, making him black considering those conditions is just absurd.

Finally the woman able to give a touch of grace and elegance in this story! Unlike the others, of course, she is in the book! Finalmente a mulher capaz pra dar um toque de graça e elegância nessa historia! Diferente das outras, claro, ela está no livro!

I really like this quote (slightly changed, but same meaning): Cordelia Chase: Why is it always women who have to do the sacrificing? ... You can bet if someone ordered a male body part for religious sacrifice, the world would be atheist like that. [snaps fingers]

It is a smart quote; nonetheless far from being accurate. In fact, men(slaves mostly) have been sacrificed in religious sacrifices as well.

Interesting. In the book (and in the 1956 film) Aouda begins fighting when the drugs start to wear off and she sees the pyre. Here she climbs on willingly and they say they've "broken" her--which honestly makes the scene less dramatic and compelling. I wonder why they made the change. Also, Fogg, did you not even have a *plan*?

Aouda did not fight in the book. She struggles in the 1956 version, a terribly unpleasant scene, and there Fogg (Niven) does nothing to save her, well hidden in the branches of a tree. In the book, Fogg, despite his "good plan," finally pulled out a knife, and he never understood what he wanted to do with it. Brosnan is the only Fogg who really sacrifices his life to save Aouda by throwing himself at the stake.

@@evelinagotchkova7548 I think the 1956 film is justified in making the scene disturbing and scary in an otherwise fun U film. The practice of widow burning is abhorrent. It wasn't some western oriental fantasy either, it really happened, there's even recorded cases right up to 1987 in India of widows having to join their late husband on the funeral pyre, willingly or not. Loud music and chanting was used to make sure the crowd couldn't hear the screams.

@@lw3646 I agree. The practice of burning widows in India is more than horrible and despite the ban of the British colonialists, the burnings were carried out in the jungles secretly. I have read suggestions that even today, similar barbarities continue to be committed in backwaters there. In Idia, women are worth less than an animal. Aouda is incredibly lucky in every way that Fogg met her, especially here in the miniseries. Otherwise, who knows what fate might have awaited her, even if she had not been married off to the old Rajah.

@Evelina Gotchkova in the book I think she does struggle too at one point, "it seemed that, shaking off the stupor of intoxication through supreme self presevervation, the unfortunate woman was trying to escape her executioners."

Widow burning was a real thing, which the British in the 1800s were actually trying to stop in India. Its not a western oriental fantasy, in India there was even a case in 1987.

The 1956 version is the best, it won 5 oscars. The BBC used to do great adaptations of classics, but lately they've been losing the plot. They have a habit now of needing to rewrite or 'update' classic novels to make them 'modern' 'contemporary' and to remove anything vaguely not in tune with a Liberal 2023 mindset. They love to cast these things too as though its 2023 not the 19th century. If certain characters they want don't exist, no problem they just invent them. The War of the Words 2018 adaptation was panned and now so is their new Woke Expectations creation.

@@lw3646 The 1956 version may have won 20 Oscars, but that doesn't mean it's really good. A lot of modern people don't like this movie, me too. The 2021 series is a complete transvestite. When a series or movie is based on a book, it should be in harmony with the book. Then "Pride and Prejudice" or "Jane Eyre" should be changed, and the fact that Jules Verne's novel is an adventure is no reason to change it beyond recognition. This version with Brosnan is the best in many ways: the action follows the flow of the book, the changes are for the good, Fogg is much better than the classic, and they showed love here that no other version has.
