Congratulations, great to see your ‘scope home’-I like the hail resistance of the metal construction too:-) As a Sydneysider I admire the clear, deep inky black skies outside Bathurst at 900m elevation-wishing you much enjoyment of your marvelous facility!
@donstronomy76066 ай бұрын
Hi Michael, Yes the metal roof does have that advantage. The skies are great when the clouds are away. Not very often at the moment. Thanks for the like.

That's really an interesting design. I would have to do one that is totally weather-tite though as the first blizzard to hit would fill the thing with a foot or two of fine snow powder.
@donstronomy7606 Жыл бұрын
Hi Rat, yeah you may be right. I have had about 3 inch's of snow on the roof. I would not want much more than that. Lucky for me it only snows a couple of times a year were I live and never more than a few inch's.

Nice work. I enjoyed watching this while it is cloudy tonight in Perth. (I live in Sydney but travel a lot) I am envious of your skies in Bathurst and know the area well. Congratulations on a fabulous observatory. We move to New Zealand when I retire and I plan to build one then too. Liked and subbed.

Saw your construction video. That’s a great design for your climate and equipment choice. I also dream about having an observatory but I don’t have the land for it nor the skies to justify it. I plan to move at retirement in a few years and that will factor great.y in my choice. May your skies be dark………

Great observatory... I watched the earlier time lapse and it was awesome! It that an Edge HD 11? I assume you shoot native long focal length, reduced focal length, and then short focal length by moving the camera to the front. That's a great combo out of one scope.
@donstronomy76062 жыл бұрын
Hi psuaero, The scope is an Edge HD 9.25. Yes all those combo's are available. I have the hyperstar, and the 0.7 reducer. Combined with a few different sensor sizes gives you many fields of view. Take car. Don

I've thought of a start would be a couple of rings from a metal grain bin.
@donstronomy7606 Жыл бұрын
Okay, I can see that. Similar to a corrugated rain tank? If that is what you are talking about then yes. I had a similar thought originally of buying a water tank 3m circumference, and then using that as the frame work for the observatory. Would have to do some creative bracing?

@MarkSeve Жыл бұрын
@@donstronomy7606 happy to help anytime. Yeah, I hadn't heard about it either, until I had to make a trip to a diatomaceous earth manufacturing plant to fix their network. Had to get in a bunny suit just to be anywhere near the stuff. Its some sort of crystalized rock, that they grind into a dust like powder. Critters walk through it, get it on themselves, take it home, then they clean themselves, get it into their system, and it cuts them from the inside, neighbor ants will consume their dead friend, and it will kill them as well. Non-toxic. Good in gardens. No, I don't work for them. lol Should take care of your ant problem. Safe for pets. Nice to get a reply to a post that isn't some 3rd world scammer.

Cool setup! Any other pests getting in there besides the ants? I live in Texas in the US, I'm sure I'd get tons of wasps and spiders coming through those small air gaps.

If I am right you seem to have mixed some aluminium into the construction. I hope you used stainless bolts and nuts and maybe some plastic isolation washers since you risk some galvanic corrosion where the two metals join. May be not such a problem if you live far enough from the sea.
@donstronomy76062 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul, very observant man. The roof is zincalume and we are far from the sea..

Nice observatory Don I ought to do a tour on mine sometime as it's a home built one but not by me, I to have a mini PC on the pier & I connect to it remotely. Nice scope you have to which makes me wonder what is the point of RASA's? I own one but not by choice & like you say you have one scope that can effectively have 3 focal lengths much better system if you ask me.
@donstronomy76062 жыл бұрын
Thank's for liking the observatory. I have not used a RASA so I cant really give a comparison between the two. The flexibility of the EDGE HD is what sold me. With a couple of different cameras gives me up to six different fields of view. I guess It works out cheaper to just use the RASA as there is no need to purchase the Hyperstar lens.
