DENJIRO: This is part of a four-episode series called "The Summer Vacation Science Project Special." Today, we'll take a look at soap bubbles.
BOY: Wow!
DENJIRO: In this science project that uses soap bubbles, we will take a close look at the colors of bubbles. A soap bubble has many colors, just like a rainbow. Observing the colors of soap film can be an interesting science project.
We've made a frame like this so that we can observe the film of the soap bubble closely. It's a rectangular frame made of thin metal wire. It has a base it can stand on to make observation easier. Next, we'll make the soap solution.
NARRATOR: First, we'll mix water and detergent in a large container.
DENJIRO: Then we'll mix glycerol, a thick liquid, to make the soap bubbles last longer. Mix the solution thoroughly. Now, we dip the frame into the soap solution. In addition, we'll place a clear case like this around the frame. This will slow down the drying process of the soap film and allow us to observe the soap film for a longer period of time. We'll place a lamp here to improve visibility.
Let's observe the soap film. We see rainbow colors. Light consists of various colors. The soap film is reflecting light, but when the film becomes 1/1,000 mm or less, we begin to see rainbow-like colors. Let's observe these colors. As time progresses, we see changes in the layers of colors.
BOYS: You're right!
DENJIRO: The changes in colors are due to the thickness of the film. The soap solution flows from top to bottom due to gravity, so the film becomes thin at the top and thick at the bottom. The areas with the same thickness will have the same color, so the colors will form in layers.
As time progresses even more, the top area turns black. It looks like there's no more film there, but it's just become very thin. It's become so thin that it is no longer reflecting light. That’s why it looks so black.
NARRATOR: You could also change the amount of detergent in the solution and observe the differences. Is there a change in the soap film’s color or the way it changes over time? Try out different things for your research.
