Obsessions of Indian Intellectuals - Part I - Dr. Kapil Kapoor - India Inspires Talks

India Inspires

India Inspires

Күн бұрын

In this talk, Dr. Kapil Kapoor shed light on psychology of Indian Intellectuals with especial focus on their obsessions. Few things that these intellectuals are perennially worries about are: caste, sati, superstition, minorities, gender and about the environment especially about whatever Hindus do, is polluting.
These intellectuals are to be distinguished from Hinduism's traditional men of knowledge, or Rishi-s. The Rishi-s were devoted to the welfare of society, and they encouraged responsibility, self-reliance and cheerfulness. By contrast, our present "intellectuals" are only Buddhi-Jivi-s, those who "use their intellect to make a living".
They have certain typical characteristics:
• They are worried, with a perennially worried look on their carefully careless-looking faces.
• They have a sense of bad luck. Thus, why did they have to be born in a poor "developing country" rather than in America?
• They bemoan everything. They are like Rudali-s, professional mourners; these intellectuals mourn all the time.
• They suffer from a Hanuman complex. Hanuman was so strong that the gods were afraid of him and cursed him to forget his strength until someone would remind him. So, they forget about the past glories of their own civilization.
• They have a Tittiri complex. The Tittiri is an Indian bird that sleeps on its back with its feet skywards, as if supporting the heavens so that they don't fall. Likewise, the intellectuals think that their enduring concern is needed to save India.
• And a little extra to cap it all: intellectuals are good at talking about a book without having read it. This they call "meta-study". (Or as their hero Ayatollah Khomeini said about Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses: "You don't need to jump into a dungheap to know that it stinks.")
Thanks to Dr. Koernaad Elst for this apt summary of Kapil Kapoor’s talk.

Very nice presentation of the topic- Our inferiority complex as compared to Westerners. British and others ( French, Dutch, Portuguese etc. ) came and systematically invaded our land by creating East India company. Later they destroyed our industry and took all the wealth. Finally left us in very poor conditions. We grow up in such poor conditions ( as compared to West) made us think we must be inferior compared to these "invaders". We forgot why Christopher Columbus and Vasco De Gama risk their lives and went on mission to search for India. They were in search of the enormous wealth and knowledge. Also bashing Hindus has become guarantee of votes for Politicians. This is going to back fire us and further polarize and divide our society and country.

Brilliant presentation. But I have faced this following situation.... I got into a train to go home and there on the floor .. banana peal, peanut peals. my feeling then........ I agree we are nice people. And the same way we do not throw waste product on the floor of our home or the floor of the people we are visiting, we can apply the the same restraint for the structures of our nation , and use the wide spread waste bins. The talk was really awesome. This is just my own experience. I completely agree with the statement that no matter how clean our surrounding is, it will become ugly if those who inhabit the place are of unclean minds. They will pollute the environment by there actions. But at the same time those with a clean and clear mind will strive to keep their surrounding clean both by speech and by action , for themselves and to a greater extent for others. I whole heartedly agree that there is too much unneeded self-criticism , though awareness is also important, but our intellectuals are only about blame rather than coming up with solutions to dissolve the source of any problem. Thank you for listening to me.Please take my opinion kindly. Namaskar!

the mind of our most 'eminent' intellectuals works this way : they have to necessarily pul down India, reduce its historic achievements, accentuate its demerits & blame it on Hinduism, vedas, Brahmins, Aryan invasion, etc.. If they don't do this, they are afraid, there may increase a feeling of positivity about India among Indians, which ight lead to nationalism, which might lead to fascism, which may finish off all Musims frm this land. Hence all the drama

I don't think it's right to say like he says, that "cleanliness is a state of mind". This is the wrong message to send out. If there is garbage and filth in trains, then it is visible to the eye and sensed by the nose. The example he gives is very silly - that you will find dirty people more hospitable than clean people. Why can't we be clean and hospitable? Proper disposal of garbage is good for everyone's health and well-being. Our ancient scriptures never condoned being filthy. "Shuchi" of various types and levels are always prescribed.

Still one of us has any bad feeling for anyone. Now if you are talking about wearing skull cap on ramzan and janeu during election. So sorry bro, your measurement for a person is pathetic. Have you ever had dinner with xi xing ping? If no, Does it means you hate chinese and you are racist? Or did you had dinner with arab sheikh? If no, does it means you hate muslims? I'm so sorry to hear such a degraded thing from you...

Agreed... this type of thinking again plays into the hands of outsiders who want to call Hindus dirty and poor... Wrong justifications like these just de-mean our scriptures more... A Hindu temple has water fountains / taps to cleanse our feet... also, at home, we won't go near our gods without taking a bath... Our mothers told us to clean our house because goddess Laxmi likes a clean and "Prasanna" household... Also, to his point about Perma-cold countries and Singapore, if rain and snow was enough to wash everything and cleanse everything, then we have monsoons too... what stopped us from washing everything in those 4 months? If there are good things to learn from westerners, like having a proper cleanliness infrastructure and discipline, then let's try to learn that too...
@abhi2110ful
@abhi2110ful 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed! a non-sensical example. How can cleanliness & hospitality be co-related?!!. Since we feel responsible to keep our homes clean, why can't we do the same for public places/ transports as well. Also, who would finally be cleaning that garbage and filth in the trains - (don't we know that) :/

VEDIC HINDUISM IS BARBARIC AND INHUMANE.. Read STUPID SANATANA VEDIC MORONISM AND injustices before talking. SHAME AND CRUEL. 1. "sathi" girls will be burnt alive when husbands dies..horrible culture. 2. "Baliya vivagh" a girl get married at 8 or 10 and if the BOY husband dies at 12 age, the girl will be tonsured and humiliated as widow and her life doomed..sometime such girls were donated to temples.. devapirar or dasi for abuses...shame culture 3. " Gangapirava" new born babies thrown into River Ganges or ganga river as religious ritual..no where such cruel infanticide other than SANTANA vedic cruelty adharma 4. "KANYA VADHA " KILLING FEMALE CHILDREN..EVEN ANIMALS WONT DO IT BUT VEDIC SANATANIST PRACTISED IT. 5. "NARA VADHA" HUMAN SACRIFICE! KILLING PREGNANT LADIES OR CHILDREN TO PLEASE GODS...NO SANE PERSON WILL DO SUCH VEDIC SANTANA barbaric PRACTICE 6.in Kerala Sambandham was a concubinage system primarily followed by the Nairs and Ambalavasi with Namboothiri in what is the present-day Indian state of Kerala. The honey moon of newly wed girls must be with nambudri brahmin priests not with husbands..vedic Santana prostitution.. 7. Untouchability..hard working low income people are low castes and they shoud not enter temples, even PRESIDENT of INDIA a well respected hindu was not permitted to enter a temple in north India. Some castes were not allowed to comeout during daytime because they are not be seen by highcastes..others cannot walk in agraharam brahmin street..only british and social reformist like Periyar changed that barbaric sanatana practices.. 8.In 19th century Travancore lower-caste women were not allowed to wear clothes that covered their breasts. They had to pay a tax called breast tax to the travancore officials if they wished to cover their breasts. SANTANA ADHARMA AND VEDIC STUPIDTIES ARE MORE AND MORE CANNOT BE POSTED HERE..

Again, he is full of errors. He says the equivalent of 'intellectual' is 'rishi', which I don't think is very accurate. A more appropriate word for 'rishi' is 'seer', one who 'sees' what others don't. In fact, Yaska's Nirukta defines rishi as: 'rishirdarshanat', he is called a rishi because he has had a vision. This vision is beyond the intellect, and is life-transforming. So a rishi is even above and beyond an intellectual. Second, he says that rishis were sannyasis. Wrong again. 'Sannyasi' is the technical name for a person who has completely renounced family and personal social life. However, throughout our history, we have had rishis who were married and had children and large ashrams with students and disciples. This didn't make them any less great. In fact, rishis have been able to provide laws because even being in society, they were above it. Third, he says Madhvacharya wrote Sarvadarshanasangraha. This is wrong. It was Madhavacharya. Details are important.

He is not fully knowledgeable about the traditional classification of mind. The proper technical term is "antahkarana" "the inner organ". It expresses itself in 4 modes - Manas, Chittam, Buddhi and Viveka. Please first learn accurately before presenting in front of an audience. This tendency of Indians to accept and work with blurred, imprecise and diluted facts is a bad one and has been the cause of our downfall - this "chalta hai" attitude. Ancient Indians were great because they were precise and accurate in their expression and communication.
