Can you please try to do the Notion vs Obsidian. Honestly I just entered Notion recently and it has been amazing, but I feel that I would like to have the graph capabilities on my side. Based on Ali Abdaal's video of tools he uses, I think that I cannot ditch Notion as there are some aspects that I enjoy. I've left #roamcult for Obsidian.md as well. The aspect I miss most is Roam's query ability to bring back open TODO items. It was helpful in putting together a dynamically updated GTD system which I've not been able to duplicate within Obsidian. Any words of advice for putting a GTD system for project/task management within Obsidian? - Next actions for World Domination (in Roam) - {{[[query]]: {and: [[TODO]] [[Project - World domination]] {not: {or: [[DONE]] [[Someday Maybe]] [[query]]]}}}}}

Hi Chuck! I haven't looked too deep into that issue but yes, Roam definitely does a great job with its ToDo items. I will see if anything similar is on Obsidian and let you know. Great video - this seems to be the big head to head for me right now, Roam or Obsidian. I cannot justify the $15pm for Roam if this is going to be $4 / FREE I think the sidebar (shift click) on Roam is smoother, but i really value the local hosting with Obsidian. The lack of blocks is the big one for me however. If I have a self created book review page, with lots of highlights imported from Kindle - that page becomes very long very fast on Obsidian - at least with Roam i am able to toggle... First world problems huh?
@NotesWithRen
@NotesWithRen 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you so much for the compliment! Same for me, price is a really big factor holding me back from using Roam! The single biggest plus for Obsidian - off line working/storage. Have control over back up, and when and where to work, etc. compared to Notion or Roam... ... likewise Evernote - just sync when back under a WiFi or network umbrella - works fine. Just issues with teams - and say similar "joint" working remotely on the same file - as per GSuite office files say... ... as oddly most of the team have access to quiet beaches and or gardens, rather than 'closed' Uni libraries

I'm a grad student and find the notion of linking ideas quite helpful. I don't, however, have much need for memorisation; so I don't really need flashcards, etc. Would you recommend Obsidian over Remnote for someone who doesn't need memorisation tools? I’m not sure if it is your editing that is taking out the natural pauses of your speech or whether you actually speak that fast. I found your points hard to follow because there is no break between points. Consider adding a title screen between segments to insert a natural pause. This will make it easier to follow. I respect the time which you put into the time stamps. But I'd personally suggest not adding so many time-stamps because 1) it leaves you with less time and 2) when there's so many time-stamps next to each other, then it kinda defeats their purpose in the first place because it's too confusing to choose which one to go into. Perhaps make a broader outline

Hi Robert! No problem at all! Thanks for watching the video :) The way that Obsidian is set up forces users to type in a separate editing pane and then view everything in the preview pane :) I’d like it better if they incorporated it all in one as well! Might be because it uses Markdown, but I’m not too sure :) Hope that helps :)

Interesting program, thanks for the review. As a long time notion user I am pretty intrigued. I think my biggest concern at this point is no mobile app....but it sounds like it's not that far away so I might have to give this a try.

So is there actually a Spaced Repetition System built in there?
@NotesWithRen
@NotesWithRen 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, Tobias! No, there isn't an internal spaced repetition system, but you can make one on your own if you'd like! Internal linking makes it quite simple (still not as great as RemNote though, as I've discovered - and will make a video on soon!) . Thanks again :)

@NotesWithRen
@NotesWithRen 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, Suvidh! There is a 'Fold heading' option in the settings that you can turn on! It's not exactly like what you can do to toggle every single bullet in Roam, but you can at least toggle the headings. Hope that helps :)

I've always heard of how physical notes are better than digital ones due to the fact that they help you remember what youre studying more.But i find that with apps like obsidian,roam,notion theres a lot of linking and stuff and i think its hard to get that with physical notes.I've been writing my own notes on paper but im thinking of changing , any advice or tips or general thoughts anyone?

Hi Gugu! Thanks for commenting :) I would definitely recommend digitizing your notes - I have very exciting video coming soon explaining my workflow and I touch a bit on why I use digital notes (AND physical notes too!) so hopefully that'll help out. But for now, a simple suggestion is to try it out :)

It's hard for me to understand the value proposition of Roam compared to this program if it's that close in function. Roam is priced higher than any productivity app/program I've used and it lacks some functionality like inline importing etc. Of course it has some great features too, and I like it's accessibility from a mobile device. It's not a question of being able to afford it, I'm not a student, it just seems to be radically higher than easily comparable services. I'm trying them all out so still learning.

Thanks so much for commenting! I have a video dedicated to a comparison of the two - Roam and Obsidian kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaq5Zaubr55_ppI Hopefully it clarifies a bit more for you, but yes I completely agree, Obsidian is so great for being free, and it's also important to test everything out to see what works best! Thanks again :)

Hi Oliver, thanks for the comment! There is currently no mobile app for Obsidian but if you use your iPad as an external monitor for your Mac (through Sidecar) or Windows (you can use an app called Duet), you are able to use the Obsidian window powered by your computer onto your iPad. Hope that makes sense :)

why does your voice bounce from left to right and change volume, it's too distracting when you record your voice, keep a consistent distance from your microphone make your voice mono in post instead of stereo, for maximum compatibility with any device (most phone speakers are mono, and if your voice is mono, you don't run into distracting audio issues like the voice bouncing from left to right)
