We are out the back of beyond today at a farm that is too far from anywhere to get telephone cables for a land line. Here is how they got around this problem.

Inside the box you will probably find an old VHF Philips FM880 Remote Subscriber Terminal. Inside the 880, some of the circuit boards might even have a Yellow Quickstick dot with my initials on to indicate that they were aligned and tested.

A radio telephone! There is plenty of them still in use here in S.A. in station country where there is absolutely NO cell coverage!! They have saved lives that's for sure!!

I designed radiotelephones for Nth QLD in the 80’s. That looks like a ‘recent’ installation as it uses a monopole - back in the day we used 9m ‘triads’.

im quite young but it seems to me australia infrastructure used to be built based on who needed/wanted what rather than how much profit it would return... i doubt this repeater was ever even fully paid for by the users

Yeah, there's a thing called "Universal Service Obligation" (USO) which specifies a minimum level of communications service (basically a landline) that has to be provided EVERYWHERE in Australia. The problem is that minimum level of service never changed even as most people started to expect other things (like fast internet). In my opinion, one of the great things about NBN (as it was originally proposed) that that USO was be extended to require some level of broadband internet service. Government would build it without having to turn a profit, and urban customers would help subsidise the services of the remote users of the network (all the remote area users will probably never cover the cost of launching the satellite they needed!).

the aerial is a highly directional Yagi design from the looks of it. By measuring the elements, its possible to figure out the frequency.

We had the first of those in NSW, years ago.. Apparently cost about $200,000 and we were charged the standard $30 line rental + call charges. Was pretty good, though scrap metal now.

In rural QLD here those things are everywhere, I have two relations that have one that provides them with a landline which they still use (they don't have mobile signal). They are far from obsolete and forgotten...

Get onto Starlink mate. Isn’t it funny, all the NBN infrastructure that’s cost billions is being made redundant with the price of Starlink falling all the time.

Starlink and mobile cellular networks in urban areas. Oh well it’s someone else’s money so who cares?
