Obtaining Czech citizenship (Getting a Czech passport)

There are generally three ways to obtain a Czech citizenship:
1. Live here long enough (the most common way, see below).
2. Through ancestors.
3. Special value for the Czech Republic.
There is no option "Citizenship for investment" or any other way to buy Czech citizenship like in some other countries.

Hey Jan, thanks a lot for the very informative video! I received my PR 3 months ago. Now I'm back home (out of EU) for 3 months (working remotely). I came across your 2 months maximum of being out of the CR to be able still to apply for the citizenship. I'd like to make sure of that piece of info. Hi Jan, thanks a lot for your videos. Very much appreciated. My wife lives in Czech Republic since 2014 (almost 8 years) without interruption but she got her permanent residence just recently. Does she have to wait 2 more years for citizenship or 5 years? (I am afraid her years as student would still be counted as half) Thanks

Hey! There is no official interview for family reunification visa :) So the most they could ask is where your flat is located and what does your spouse do in Prague :) Usually they do not ask anything though.

Hi Jan, Could you please tell how the time spent abroad is calculated? If a person moves abroad immediately after receiving his Czech permanent residence, will the time spent abroad somehow counted in while applying for Czech citizenship? Or only the time spent in Czech Republic will be considered.

Well, I think that living abroad very much decreases the chances of getting the citizenship. Besides other things, you A) Must be staying in CZE and B) Be integrated into Czech society. Both hard to do if you are not here.

Hey Jan, thanks for the video. What are the odds to get the citizenship in my not so common situation. I gained my EU citizenship from another EU country in my third year of residence in the Czech Republic. Before that, I had an employee card as a non-EU citizen. By now I've left the Czech Republic, but I have lived a bit more than three years in the CR. Would these years before I received my EU-citizenship count or am I already disqualified for leaving the country in the first place? Thanks

Hello! There is a long way to getting a Czech citizenship unless you have some ancestors from here. I would recommend starting with long-term visa or long-term residence permit (see my video from 11.11.2021).

Hi Jan I have PR since 2007,have czech education 6 years, no criminal record, no debt, no social burden. I worked and lived in denmark for the last 2 years 10 months. I still have PR and the same adress in CR while i was abroad.Now im back living in czechia for 1 year. Do you think i should apply now ? Or wait maybe 1 2 years more.

Hi Michael, well, you have to, among others, prove your income for the last three years so I would for sure recommend waiting a bit.

I believe i can get the czech passport cuz i have been living here for so long in the past. But i dont know if i pass the 5 years continuos permanent residency requirement though. I guess i will just try and apply. if i get rejected maybe in 1-2 year. i can still apply again right away,right?

I don't see any issue about maintaining health insurance while you are gone as health insurance is affordable in the Czech Republic and if God forbid you need medical care that you can't get abroad because of issues connected to costs or availability issues, then you can come to the Czech Republic for medical care for no extra cost!

My Czech spouse is now a dual American citizen and does not have to keep paying for Health insurance and is covered here in the US, when we move back to the CR we just have to show that they were covered by health insur during all the time away, if you cant prove it, then you have to pay,
