OC Fashion Week 2017: Making a Hermes Scarf Part 2

The demo for making a Hermes Scarf continues, and I continue to record it for fun. This video is the 2nd step, where the black outline on the white silk sheet are drawn, and then different colors are place at different areas, in the same process.
As you can see, he is doing a form of line art in different steps to create the black outlines of the particular design. Each step makes certain lines darker, bolder and thicker in order to bring out certain shapes at certain area to bring out certain forms and shapes of the graphic design on the scarf. Notice that each board looks like a huge stencil with a different design, but used together, one after the other, they help create the full outline picture. He is now adding blue shades to the outlines in order to slowly fill up the scene with different colors as well as different shapes of a color to create depth.

The device itself is impressive. They truly have prefected this craft.

Silk screen printing ... I did a course back in 1980. Fun part is preparing the screens with photo-resist, exposing it to ultra-violet then washing out the transparent parts. Lasting memory though is of cleaning the residual ink off the screens. It's messy. Tutor was a chap named Stuart Cameron, IIRC.

Can't quite see when he does with his right hand to adjust the registration. Presumably the screen is moved relative to the jig and locked in place. Then the jig has an indexing mechanism to look after registration on the second print.

What type of paint do you use?

i dont know what they use. this was at the mall, at a fashion event. maybe the actual Hermes store knows.

I can’t tell you exactly what they use, but it isn’t paint, it’s a fabric ink. For what they do, which is screen printing, they use a specific type of ink.

Emily it’s not ink it’s dye in a thickener
