Fun Fact: Hyrule Field is actually not much bigger than any of the other zones in the game. The reason why it feels so big is because the designers used alot of optical tricks to make it feel massive. These include adding alot of hills that make it difficult to see the entire zone all at once and having Lon Lon Ranch in the center to further obstruct the players view of the entire area.

A note about the fishing mini game, you can obtain a sinking lure by walking along the banks. This can in turn be used to catch a unique fish that hangs out close to the bottom in the middle of the lake. It's pretty heavy and looks strange, and if I recall correctly there's no reward for catching it, but it's a fun little easter egg for anyone interested

Playing the game for the first time at 9 years old, the scale definitely felt m a s s i v e. Our imaginations just filled in so much, my brother and me speculating endlessly on what lay in the land beyond the tall walls we couldn't traverse. It's amazing how small OoT's game environment seems now, though I still feel it's perfect for what it is.

Absolutely, I remember when I first played it I was also 9 years old in 2001. I remember when I first got out of the Kokiri forest. It was transcendent. The world seemed so massive. I felt like I could go out and do whatever I want like I was going to go talk to the king of Hyrule or just go chill with some common Folk in kakariko. It took me a few months to get out of Kokiri forest, mainly because I was scared of spiders as a kid and the Deku Tree freaked me out someone. I got over the fear and figured out how to break the central web by jumping off the ledge down to the bottom part of the tree. But in that period before I got out of Kokiri Forest I remember going into the Lost Woods because it seemed less scary, the woods seems so vast. And I realized that it led to other parts of hyrule. Like going into that portal that takes you to Goron City was like a teaser of what lie out in the world. I felt like the Lost Woods went on forever and that I would never run out of secret rooms to find.

Another great video and a fun end to this series. It's clear from aspects like the mostly empty overworld and segmented areas that Nintendo were still working things out and learning as they go, it's amazing just how much they were able to accomplish with this first step and (as you pointed out) how many elements cemented themselves as part of the series iconography going forward. This also appears to be the start of a shift where the overworld shifts from being a puzzle to solve and find secrets, to a landscape one can traverse and take in the atmosphere, which I personally enjoy, but I get why fans who enjoy ALTTP might find it a little plain (which might be why Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild experimented to find a balance between the two). Keep up the good work, and I'm looking forward to seeing how you tackle Majora's Mask (which is one of my personal favourites).

Thank you for all your hard work on making these podcasts. They’re such a treat to watch/listen to. I started playing Majora’s Mask when I was a kid, but didn’t make it much farther than the first dungeon. Way, way, way too complicated for me at the time. And still is to some degree. But the wife and I finally finished it last year. After about 20 years, I finally finished it. AND we completed it right around midnight. Hahahaha. Can’t wait to see your new series on Majora’s Mask!!!

Its really incredible to look at the Gigaleak maps and realize that, despite how big the maps felt at the time, *they shrunk down most of the maps by at least 30-40% from their earlier versions.* I'm sure that they made a pact to never utter a word about this in the "Bigger is Better" era where they were still selling a console based on the number of bits, but they showed incredible foreward thinking in choosing to curate their content for a tight, concise experience, instead of going for raw square footage. I strongly encourage everyone to check them out if you haven't yet- maps like Hyrule Field, Kokiri Forest, Zora River and the Water Temple demonstrate just how massive Zelda 64 was going to be... And why the change was a wise choice overall. All that extra walking seems like such a slog. There's a reason that Skyrim and BotW make you stumble over a monster, harvestable plant or NPC every 15 feet- if you don't, a player starts to feel like they're walking through an ametur Second Life sim. OoT basically only gives you that much time with nothing to do but walking when you have a great view and may need some time to subtly decide what to do next, like walking into Kakariko Village. (Even Hyrule Field secretly puts you on a timer as a kid, and gives you the option to ride a horse as an adult)

Z targeting was definitely invented here. There was no game that had the ability to not only target in open world 3D, but move/strafe while targeted, and being able to switch targets/untarget an enemy. I hear the megaman comparison all the time, and yeah, it’s probably a precursor, but Z targeting in OoT is the grandfather of all targeting used today.

Navi didn't really bother except in certain dungeons. The deku tree I think she interrupts four times, Dodongos cavern she interrupts once or twice, but the Forest temple is where she really nags. She tells you that arrows are painted on the floor, the corridor is twisted, the ceiling is falling, etc. After that, she's pretty cool. I think that is where people got the misconception she is annoying. She's annoying for exactly one dungeon.

My only complaint is that when you show quotes from developers, the screen is very bright compared to the rest of the video. I never liked how so much of the map is crammed into the northeastern 3/8ths or so… they could’ve had the entrance to Zora’s Domain in the empty northwest corner of Hyrule Field, and moved Kokiri Forest further south, with the entrance beyond that trees-y area in the southeast 🤙

Great video. In terms of dungeons being distinct, themed, fully-realized areas, I don't think the game has been surpassed in the series. Maybe this is childhood nostalgia talking to some degree, but I can remember basically each Ocarina of Time dungeon offhand and tell you a little bit about the mood and atmosphere each one sets. Struggle to do that with most of the rest of the series.
@Crichjo32
@Crichjo32 11 ай бұрын
Fully agree man. The atmosphere and themes of each dungeon in OoT is something no Zelda has ever been able to recapture, except for MM (which is pretty much OoT dlc anyway). Take the Forest Temple in OoT, that place evokes such an indescribable feeling in me everytime I play it, and I've beaten OoT countless times.

IF they do a remake. IF, not 'when'. I've been hearing these pseudo-rumors too, and honestly... I'm not sure if remaking OoT is feasible. Turns out when you take a pathetically small, abstracted game world and make it more realistic in terms of scale, the whole game's scale becomes ASTRONOMICALLY larger, and in Oot's case, that also means you'd have to scale up the dungeons too. Let me ask you this: do you REALLY want to go through a Water Temple that's 15 times larger and 15 times more complicated, and takes 20 times longer to get through than the original as a result? If the answer is "no" then I think you're starting to see the problem of remaking OoT on the same level as the FF7 project.

@@damonullerick6572 bro, links awakening, omega ruby, crisis core reunion all got decent remakes without 15x the size. I'm not sure where you're getting thar number from. Your distaste in the game came through in this video. Especially when you make a claim and then right after say you aren't sure, it adds a bias taste to a potential good doc style video. You also focus a lot on 'people think this is the first game to do so and so but it's not.' You did that a few too many times, like focusing on that for so much of this video and over and over, didn't feel natural. Otherwise good.
