"It is like a small town isolated in a city of a million people by a river bed, a hill, and the Pacific Ocean." Cathy Clark digs deep to explain one of the most unique and eclectic areas of the city. Young and old agreed it had mellowed a bit and said it was the transients that caused problems, not the residents. 43 years later, some might say not a lot has changed in Ocean Beach - one of the seaside communities of San Diego.

Near the end they were looking down Narragansett hill! If they'd have gone a few hundred yards further You could have seen the house I grew up in!! I wrecked up in an epic way on everything that had wheels man! Skates, bikes, skateboards, and even totally wiped out in the alley flying on a flexie! (a sled but with wheels haha!) Cool to be able to show this to my friends who have been hearing my stories forever!

As a young newlywed married to a submarine sailor, I lived in one of those cottages in 1974-75.

Wow. Remember the good old days when the transients hanging out near the South OB parking lot were just runaways and sailors on leave?

1978? I was definitely 15 years old and living down there. The Rocky Horror Picture Show at The Strand. The Taco Place up the hill in Pt. Loma by the H.S. - Going to Dana Jr. High...eating clouds and roses with friends I've not seen in 42 years...it was that Robin Trower song..."In City Dreams" and we just lived it well. MAN I'm homesick!

Born right next to dogs beach in 1975 on Point Loma Blvd and lived a number of years as a child on Voltaire. Best memories of my life are from there.

This is so great. My father lived at "CLUB5106" West Point Loma Ave in 79-81, He taught my brother and I how to play chess and how to build sand castles on dog beach. He and his friends placed second in the Annual Sand Castle Contest held on Mariners Point that year, and many other years before and after, we watched the coverage later that day on CBS 8 News my father was sitting in the race car they built. Great memories of better times for America. God Bless America

I miss the old OB People's Market from the 70's & 80's before they got the new building. I remember it was a very hippy vibe in there, I loved it, it kinda felt like walking into a barn

I was going to O.B. Peoples school across the street from there. The same folks who started the co-op were our teachers! I recall Haas avocados were sold by the pound! for a buck you could get an entire days worth of fresh vegies etc. mmmmm sigh homesick!

My mother just passed away a few days ago and it has me reminiscing about growing up in OB. One of the funny moments of her I think of is us ordering carrot juice there once in the early 80s and the guy making it pulled the carrots out of a sack that was full of dirt and just started juicing them. My mom made a comment and his response was it’s “organic dirt”. Her response was “rinse off our carrots and save that organic dirt for your dinner since you don’t mind it”. He had nothing to say back snd rinsed off the carrots. I grew up just down the street on Voltaire. We shopped there often. For a few years my uncle (moms brother) was their source of fresh orange juice.

@@BrokenRRT So sorry to hear about your mom, love her quick come-back. The entire OB Peoples felt like it was covered in organic dirt, it *almost* seemed like it had a dirt floor, which was part of it's charm. Such a gift to have those memories and have lived in those times. Amazing how quickly the time has flown. I heard someone say this week: 'The days are long but the years are short' and it's so true. I used to work at a juice bar in the 80's in PB at a place called 'New Seed' as a teenager, life was just starting out then, now here we are middle-aged. Would love to hear some more stories about your Mom and OB.

Constant ongoing Illegal stops by San Diego cops based only on the length of your hair, style of your clothing, or the color of your skin. I remember many times walking in San Diego and being stopped for no reason at all and enduring thirty minute bench warrant checks for absolutely no reasons at all. I didn't drink or use drugs or smoke cigarettes or steal or vandalize. Now that's a waste of tax money. Even the USSR wasn't as bad at the time with such illegal stops and constitutional violations of basic rights like the San Diego "mostly no good cops" were. Born, raised, and lived 25 yrs in San Diego and never had a cop help me with even one thing. I feel bad over how city political corruption and back room dealing politics has wrecked San Diego. It was a paradise in the 50's and 60's, but now is just one big highrise overly populated heap after the Navy did its dirty dealing with corrupted San Diego politicians. Shame on the Navy brass for wrecking San Diego with it's back room political dealings during the 1970's.

I remember Spaceman! He gave those of us who " believed", a paper ticket that would ensure we would be able to safely travel off the earth when " the time came." I accepted a ticket from him, though just for fun. That was probably in 1980.
