Today’s easy beginner acrylic painting tutorial is of a colorful tropical oasis landscape of a large dock jutting out into the crystal-clear Caribbean Ocean with a bright sunny sky with drifting clouds floating by. Throughout the easy step-by-step art tutorial, you'll learn fundamental beginner painting techniques, on how to mix and blend acrylic paint using color theory to create natural water and landscape summer colors. You'll learn how to draw with acrylics on canvas, how to draw and paint sky and clouds, how to draw and paint an ocean and ocean waves, and how to draw and paint a pier. Canvas: 10x20 stretched primed canvas
Brushes: 3/4 inch flat bristle, #6 bright synthetic, #3 round synthetic
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, burnt umber (brown), phthalo green, deep yellow, ultra marine blue, mars black and fire red
Other: cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint base coat on canvas with blue, black, white, green and yellow
2. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint sky and clouds with blue, light blue (made in step 1), white and red
3. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint next layer to water with blue, brown, green, yellow, light green (made in step 1), light blue and white
4. #6 bright brush -- Finish water with black, blue, green, white, light blue, light green, brown and yellow
5. #3 round brush - Paint base coat for dock and island with brown, black and white
6. #3 round brush - Finish island with brown, yellow, white, green and light blue
7. #3 round brush - Finish roof, dock and water with black, brown, yellow, red, white, light green, light blue and dark blue (made in step 4)
8. #3 round brush - Finish top of the hut and ropes with tan (made in step 7), brown, white, black, yellow and red
9. #3 round brush -- Sign with brown

Hi Stanny, I purchase all my canvases already primed. You can use a layer of acrylic gesso if so desired but it's not necessary if the canvas is already primed when purchased. Have fun painting.

Hi Michelle, love watching you and painting along. So appreciate you teaching us and your techniques. I can never get such smooth strokes and gliding like you do even though I coat my canvas with 2-3 Coates of gesso first and use spritz of water along the way. Was wondering how you feel about liquid white and if it would even be possible to coat the canvas with that when you’re using acrylics?
