I was doing 4-6 foot waves this week on my Ocean Kayak "Scrambler" in the OBX, NC. You can plow through and ride any wave up to 8 feet, IMHO, with the right technique of being patient and leaning back when sliding down a wave. It is a great workout and a ton of fun.

Back in the 70's my friend and I took a 12 foot aluminum boat with a 6hp engine and rode the waves. Very lucky we didn't flip it. Waves were maybe 3-4 foot. We were young and crazy back then too. We also caught quite a few shark back then on the beach wade fishing. There were a lot of them but mostly shovel nose at 2 ft length. If I were younger, I'd still be doing it. Keep on keeping on and have fun while you can!!!

Cool video guys I have kayaked in some nasty stuff Here is my advixe to you guys first when you approach a 4-7ft wave lean all the way back in your seat I have never flipped going out and have gone in some monster waves the most dangerous time is the trip back and gets more dangerous as you approach one of the bars if you do get dumped out go underwater and try and stay for a few seconds it helps clear the kayak away from your head and body it does not feel good to get hit in the head by 40-50 pounds of kayak Third if the moon isn't out at night don't risk going out after dark when the waves are that big it's just not worth it and lastly I know you all don't like paddle leashes but on days like that they do come in handy if you get dumped out past the bar. Keep up the good work and tight lines guys

I have the exact same kayak and the same things happened to me many times 😂 I go out in San Diego, and even when the waves seem small from shore, they're huge once you start paddling out. Getting the timing down is tricky, sometimes if you catch a break wrong theres just nothing you can do.

I notice you don't have thigh straps fitted. Why not? I go kayak surfing in Cornwall in UK and find they help control the kayak. (Wavesport scooter) I surf around 4ft waves which are big enough for me. After all I am 69 and started kayaking 3 years ago.
@GulfCoastNation3 жыл бұрын
hey! We haven't heard of that before! But being strapped in wouldn't work great because we have to jump in and out quick! Might have to check it out though!
@paulgranpop5363 жыл бұрын
@@GulfCoastNation They go around your knees and are quick release not strapped on. They give much more control of the Kayak like you would in a sit inside kayak. With them you can lift one side of the kayak by leaning over. Hope this helps.

My family of 4 were thinking of renting 2 tandem kayaks for a beach trip to Fort Morgan. This video has me thinking otherwise. We've only ever kayaked lazy rivers. Would paddle boards be better for paddling around right past the break? I was thinking kayaks would be easier and safer but not after watching this, lol. Is it even safe for a inexperienced paddlers to be out in the gulf coast?
@GulfCoastNation3 жыл бұрын
Hey Heather! Just be sure to check the weather conditions about 4-5 days before your stay! Somedays the Gulf can be very nasty with big waves like this and heavy current. Other days it can be as calm as a lake with hardly any water movement! This largely depends on waves and storms in the area! P.S we use magicseaweed.com to check the swell report!- It only reads a few days out, hope this helps! gulfcoastnation.com

@GulfCoastNation3 жыл бұрын
Gotta find that balance of wind and waves along with a good kayak. Good kayak is key! Best thing you can do is get out there and play in the waves first with out a bait! Best teacher is experience! We could do 3ft at 8s no problem but there was a time that would have killed us in the ole pelican kayak 🤣 Get out there and play first, see how you do
