Probably local fisherman using this as cheap solution for a sinker The cost for them is a bag.

Great point about the sinkers. We definitely considered that possibility. However the size of the stones in the video, around 1.5 lbs each (24 ounces), some are 2 lbs, seems excessive for typical offshore fishing sinkers, which usually max out around 8 ounces for larger fish using the bottom/bounce fishing methods. This weight difference makes us consider that perhaps this is a different fishing method? We’re still investigating the mystery behind these stone bags. Any further thought or insights will be helpful.

@@godiveph1287 Perhaps a cheap breakaway sinker? If the bag was tied around the line, the bag is strong enough to sink bait but would tear when bitten by a sensitive fish mouth. I'm not a saltwater angler, but we use barrel sinkers for trout for this reason; the line slides so the fish doesn't feel the weight. Maybe this is an option used by people who prefer ultralight or light tackle to ditch a weight after a fish hits? Or a breakaway sinker like this could prevent line from snagging on the coral. I really do think this is cheap sinker gear, as others have said. Irresponsible regardless. Thank you for cleaning it up.

@@godiveph1287 Could be that the bags are meant to float for a while, hence all being tied closed, then as air slowly leaks out of them the stones carry them to the bottom? That specific size of rock looks like it would be needed to balance out that size of bag full of air, to make something that floated without blowing away or sunk very slowly/after a while

The varying degrees of algae and state of the bags seems to suggest they weren't all just dumped at once. Maybe fishermen that find dropping them increase fish attracted to the area because of the sight/sound of them falling through the water, or at least the think it's helping them to fish? Seems like a very strange idea, mind you, but I can't help but think it's someone in a boat doing it and I can't help but wonder how familiar they really are with the sea life that's really below them. In other words they're likely not thinking (or caring) about the turtles but are likely doing it for some other reason, I would have to think. Very odd, indeed, but thank you for cleaning up what you could!

Hi, thanks for watching. Your comment perfectly captures the sense of confusion, concern and mystery about this situation! The potential impact on turtles and the reef is alarming, regardless of the reason behind the bags. I definitely agree the varying states of the bags suggest they were placed over time. Your point about attracting fish is very interesting - I haven't heard that before, but it's worth exploring. While the motivation behind this mystery remains unclear, it highlights the complex relationship between humans and the ocean. Your comment about fishermen's perspective is a crucial angle to look at. We’re doing what we can to rid the reef of the stone plastic bags. Diving at 80-100ft limits our bottom time and we only dive on weekends. And that's not all - sometimes, rough seas and strong currents limit boat access, forcing us to travel underwater from shore and navigate our way to the reef and back with underwater scooters. But knowing the damage these bags can cause to the reef and its inhabitants fuels our determination. We're committed to making a difference, one bag at a time. It's a slow process, but every bit counts!

Were they possibly in a straight ish line? Maybe they were used to sink a large fishing net. @@godiveph1287

Answer the question-what do turtles do, or are they perceived to do, that competes or interferes with something that some humans in your area do, and you will have your answer.

Hi, thank thank you for your comment and for watching. Green sea turtles are some of the most gentle and peaceful creatures in the ocean. Their calm demeanor and non-aggressive behavior make them an enchanting sight for any diver, especially beginners. These beautiful creatures play a vital role in maintaining the health of the ocean. They peacefully graze on Jellyfish, seagrass and algae, helping to keep the balance of marine ecosystems in check. Their presence signifies the harmony and beauty of our underwater world, making them an essential part of any diver's introduction to the ocean's wonders. They don’t compete with humans in anyway. I can’t imagine that anyone would dump the stone bags in the reef to harm the turtles.

@@godiveph1287 if the turtles aren’t the intended target then something else is and the turtles are “collateral” damage. I cant imagine that anyone would dump the stone bags in the reef for no reason.

Hopefully after the dive you spread the word about the bags being dangerous to sea life and to please stop
@godiveph128711 ай бұрын
Absolutely, we made sure to spread the word after the dive. That's also why this video was created so it can be broadly shared and divers will know what to look for and what to do. This strange and harmful situation could be occurring in other locations. Please help us raise awareness by sharing this video. Thanks!
