My personal cannon is that Oceania is limited strictly to the British Isles, their revolution having not succeeded in the U.S., Australasia, South America, or South Africa, and their war against "Eurasia" and/or "Eastasia" is their conflict against NATO remnants. This is an astounding video as always.

I also assumed that, but if you analyze a little, possibly the revolution was carried out while they were still an empire and since it was a popular movement that was also highly elected by elections (if I remember correctly) and once they won, the only thing left to do was to replace the "Order" in the Colonies. I do believe that each State of "1984" is as powerful as described.

I love, in a dark sort of way, how the man in the Moment of Truth section was likely thrown under the bus by the party, purely so they could correct a statistic for *milk rations* without making it look like a mistake on their part. That's Big Brother to an absolute tee.
@mareksicinski37265 ай бұрын
I think the point was suposed to be they changed, lowered, the rations and didn’t want people to know
@mareksicinski37265 ай бұрын
It is also a bad interpretation of 1984, ie. the person thinks it’s about just random generic “facts” not history
@CommanderCool1015 ай бұрын
@mareksicinski3726 I disagree. Yes, the party was fundamentally geared towards altering recorded history to better buttress it's image as an eternal monolith, but this extended to the minutae of quotas and resource allocations. If the milk rations were 450mg, then they had *always* been 450mg, and the party never made mistakes. If the ration ever HAD been 500mg, or even a figure different, then it could only be the work of internal sabotage by rebellious entities. Hence the "confession", probably something tacked on to this man's list so they could explain it away as such.

I remember after reading the book in High school having a conversation with my friend (both the best fans of Alternate History and Real History), was there any hope in the world of 1984 and was it the perfect totalitarian society. I decided that it's wasn't perfect and if anything what we see in the book is Oceania not at it's triumph but at it's end. New speak, the constant propaganda, and schizophrenic social control was the last desperate attempts of a collapsing system to hold on. Every decision made by the party to attempt to increase control was indirectly cause the systems that the party relied on stagnant and become more ineffective haste its own collapse. New speak being the perfect example of this. It would give the party control of language but because of it's clunkiness and difficulty of clear communication it causes the ability for the party to make quick decisions only causing frustration and social collapse, making rebellion the only option if you wanted to communicate clearly.
@Epentibi5 ай бұрын
It is easy to say Oceania is a collapsing system, but I think the cautionary tale that Orwell is trying to portray is contrary - this psychotic dictatorship is far from being able to collapse. This can be seen from how easily the so called resistance was crushed by the Ministry of Love in the end, even Goldstein, the alleged enemy and leader of the resistance, may very well be manufactured by Oceania themselves.
@bulbainquisition95905 ай бұрын
@@Epentibi I think it's very clear that the resistance is a creation of Oceania or at least the name Goldstein (the Goldstein is very much Trotsky stand in), and I don't think Orweil is attempting to create a totalitarian regime in decline just happenstance. Though it is roughly a "alternate history" and fiction at its core a book of political caution not well thought out universe I just believe that a regime using hard totalitarianism in the way Orwell has described in the book is a self-defeating system. The boot cannot stomp forever because it needs food, water and humans to wear it and no amount of propaganda and terror can break the hard limits of reality which is the true enemy of Oceania. No amount of propaganda slogans, secret policeman and mind control can make food appear on plates, boots for feet and razor blades to shave with, these are what give the state's power not guns and policemen. It is its ability to live up to its promises. If anything the propaganda and social control makes the failings of the state more apparent, Winston begins to doubt because he sees the differences between the imaginary world created by propaganda and real world around him, if he is noticing others are as well. The attempt to implement newspeak is the last desperate attempt in my opinion to hold off total collapse but I will admit I don't believe that is what Orwell attended with it. But it is so insane that I believe it will be the final weight to lead to the collapse of the whole system. It's the creation of a desperate and out of touch leadership who needs a "wonder weapon" to win the war. Sorry for the long rant, it's something that thought about for a long time. It's just my own head Canon/theory
@giorgospapoutsakis52715 ай бұрын
Mentioning Newspeak and and you saying that it wasn't the ideal dystopia, you're probably right! a detail someone pointed in a different 1984 related video, a comment said that in the end of the book that point's out some gaps about Newspeak it says that it *was* the language of Oceania,not is,WAS,and that's the only optimism in the entire book that mentions a possible end to this global totalitarian regime, bone chilling

Honestly, Orwell's 1984 is not a perfect dystopia, but it truly is a book on the power of langauge, which is something Orwell was always obsessed with the idea that words could be manipulated to warp people's mind, like the iconic motto of INGSOC. Honestly though, my favorite part was the part of the book is when Winston and Julia read Goldstein's book, and we the reader, alongside them, learn what truly happened, plus a bit of cultural hegemony theory sprinkled in. I hope one day Epentibi, you'll make a video on the world of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (now that's a novel I'm dying to read) as it's a dystopia not of repression like here, but more an exploration of how far human progress and efficiency can go, and how a scientifically manufactured society where everyone is happy and grows old isn't entirely the greatest scenario.
