This sounds wonderful. I'm going to show this video to my class of 4-year-olds. One of them asked me suddenly, "Why can plants grow underwater like in Finding Dory?" And I chanced upon this. It may not answer her question as she was referring to seaweed and all but it's a good start.

How do you harvest though, won't you damage the plant as soon as you take it out?

Imagine reseeding a sea floor that's been degraded by pollution and oil spills. You could save entire species of fish life!

does anyone know how they control the co2 and o2 levels in the sphere? maby its a dumb question but i dont see the explanation.

Won't the limited air supply run out of carbon dioxide for photosynthesis? Apologies if this was explained and I had missed it.
@OceanReefGroup8 жыл бұрын
No worries! actually plants don't only consume CO2 and Make oxygen - they do consume O2 as well and make CO2 . it's called the night and day cycle - every plant has it's own :)
@XIanosX7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is true that plants release a part of their CO2 in the night because only the mitochondria is working then, but to actual grow a plant it always needs more CO2 molekules becasue you cannot keep a "perpetum mobile " ecosystem. Otherwise the Ecosystem will stagnate, because the day and night cycle will keep being in something like a equilibrium. But probably it will be enougth if SCUBA- Divers breath out a few times in these gardens. A human with a lungvolume of 3,5 liters consumes round about 7% of the 21 % Oxygen in the atmosphere per deep breath. So i guess that wont be a problem. Also CO2 and O2 always diffuse a bit with the surface of the water and want to keep concentration gradient in balance, also known as Brownian motion. After all i think this Projekt is very interesting and might aswell be a nice Projekt like vertikal Farming.

I'm curious about how the plants receive CO2? Is air continuously pumped in from an intake tube that is floating on the surface?
@wilfried021219695 жыл бұрын
You guys are crazy - genious crazy. And passionate. But one question: how are You doing pollination? Are you doing it manually? I mean, there are no insects. Or are You doing it with a ventilation. There was in the last years an experiment at the german side of Lake Constance - and they compared tree differfent weays of pollination of apple trees: one with insects, one only with the wind (air pollination) and then manually. The air pollination brought smaller apple, the manual pollination bigger apples without stones.

Does the dome need CO2 to be added gradually? Have you tested trees, corn, wheat, flowers? These could have been used to save the world in the movie interstellar...
@OceanReefGroup6 жыл бұрын
there's a nice thread about this a couple of comments down if you want to learn more about it! we tested flowers - corn, wheat and trees are too large for our domes unfortunately:) I wish they asked us to participate with the movie! :)

@adalbertoperez46486 жыл бұрын
There is a soil crisis, the soil is being depleted faster than nature can produce it. And now you want to take soil from land to the ocean, soil that is depleted of nutrients over decades of exploitive but profitable farming techniques. It might be better to grow algae that can recover the nutrients lost to the ocean by run-off, without the need for a biosphere. This method does very little to reduce the acidity, recover nitrogen from dead sea zones, reduce the acidity of the ocean when compared to other mariculture methods. If you want to grow tomatoes on the ocean look at Ricardo Radulovich's early work a decade ago.

we have progressed the engineering every year with sensible leaps forward. we expect it to scale both in size, but also with the application of our latest discoveries in terms of structure

I love this, but the animals? It's not a provocation, just a question. Sorry if I lost the answer in the video.
@OceanReefGroup6 жыл бұрын
No worries at all Martina (should we chat in Italian?) - Animals LOVE the project site!! IF you are Italian, you should definitely come over to Noli (SV) and check it out for yourself. It's open to anyone (to dive, snorkel or free dive around - not in - the biospheres). Animals have colonised the whole thing. we have seahorses, octopus, every sort of fish we have in that part of the sea... you name it! they all seek shelter and home in parts of the structure. It works as a wreck, or an artificial reef. It's Amazing!

Who would clean the algae off the glass? If algae grows then the light will get blocked out.
@thetruthalwaysscary8 жыл бұрын
There are many type of glasses on some algae does not grow. On regular it does so your question is valid.

Hey Emily! good point! we moved to a kind of plastic now that let's in a lot more light than PVC, and is also a lot more "resistant" to algae!

OceanReefGroup When i think of such project the glass or plastic is not as important like the material which holds it together. Corrosion especially is salt water is fast and real bad.

agree :)!!! but it is too soon to think about a commercially available underwater plant. we are inventing new ways and structures to reduce (and we are succeeding in this ) the cost of the crops - but it is also a matter of numbers - the cost is now high because the offer is limited. the more bios we create around the world, the less it's gonna cost. it takes a little time but we are getting there. plus, the aims are various, not only one to create an alternative food source for the supermarkets around the globe, but research, tourism, medical etc.
