Just so you know where these "octave strings" came from . . . strings were made for small-scale instruments for a long time. One day a light-bulb went off in someone's head, and they said, "Hey, let's put these 1/10 cello strings on a viola (same size instrument) and see what happens."

Hi Marijke. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. Those deep notes are amazing. By any chance would you know where I could find octave viola strings? The supplier linked stopped production after a company buyout it seems. I found a post online suggesting instead achieving cello sound on viola by doing this: 1. Tune Viola G3 to Cello A4 2. Tune Viola C3 to Cello D3 3. Install cello G2 & C2 strings. I am thinking of getting regular cello G and C strings to try that out, or perhaps just grabbing a set of 1/8 cello strings. Maybe I'd be better off at that stage just buying a 1/8 cello.. Any advice appreciated :)

Hey, I just wanted to suggest that when you play the Viola and/or cello that you use more dramatic vibrato. Really interesting. Great that you can apply Alto to the Cello for now while you pick up bass clef. When I try to help my son out with his violin pieces and try to apply treble clef to viola, it’s like I completely forget the treble clef despite reading it for piano. I sit there staring at a note asking him ‘what note is that again?’. It’s like a ‘feel’ thing or reaction that disappears. Totally weird!
@MarijkeViolin5 жыл бұрын
Indeed, the different clefs can get so confusing! I think I wouldn't have a hard time learning to read in the bass clef because it wasn't hard to learn the alto clef either. I think I'll do that this Summer during the holidays, when I have 6 weeks off. 😋😊

@elmore7075 жыл бұрын
I think the key to getting the most out of the octave strings for the violin, in order to get the best tone quality/cello like sound is simply to have the right tools to work with. These strings probably do not work very well on low end instruments which already sound quite dull with regular strings. Esther Abrami used octave strings on her violin and it sounded amazing and pretty darn close to an actual cello I was surprised! but again, since she is a pro violinist, I assume her instrument costs atleast 10,000 dollars idem ditto for the bow. I think if you have a good quality bow and good quality instrument you can get the most out of it, and not so much in combination with a cheap instrument and bow. but how many of us have a spare violin and bow laying around with a value of atleast 1000 dollar plus? probably not many of us!
@MarijkeViolin5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree! These strings will no doubt sound better on a good violin/viola. But indeed, I didn't have an expensive viola laying around, lol.
@magdabem15535 жыл бұрын
I've also seen Allison Sparrow trying the octave strings on her Stentor II violin (which retails at around 180 euro) and it sounded great as well. So, I believe it's more the skills of the player rather than the price of the instrument that makes your playing sound good. I'm, by no means, saying this to offend you Marijke, I know you're still learning, so noone expects you to perform like someone who's been playing for 20 years or more 😉 However, what I often see in beginners is that they think that if they buy expensive, more professional equipment, it will automatically make them sound better, which will not. What will actually make you sound better is regular practice, patience and time. And you can do just as well with your good quality student violin/viola👍

Very interesting and informative! Thanks for your work on this. You did such a professional job of putting this video together. I would say it might be easier to get a good sound out of an electric viola when doing this because the electric viola is less dependent on the natural acoustics of the instrument. I strung one of my electric violins with viola strings and it was pretty good compared to trying it with an acoustic violin. Maybe you would consider trying a cello. My hands are not that big so I would try a 3/4 cello if I was to try it.

I really tried to like octave Sensicores but I just couldn't. Strings G thru E sounded okay albeit without much volume, and the C string was way too flubby. I think notes this low should be played on steel core strings, which is probably why the vast majority of cellists play on steel strings. @@MarijkeViolin sure i know i play the viola or used to, I miss playing it in the orchestra loved the sound. Anyway Cello are tuned octave below violas CGDA. I'm just saying cellos sound the way they do because of the perfect or near perfect accoustic match between body size and sound produced. Same with violin. That's why the violin and cello can project their sound better than the viola. The viola should be about half the size of the cello and much larger than the violin to produce the same carrying capacity. Actually you can see an example of this with the new violin family, it has the viola in its correct size, but then it's played as a cello. KZbin it.
