Gotta say regarding muzzle brakes and compensators... At Red Oktober this past weekend, I quickly learned to shoot the precise targets first, especially in Stages 2, that way I didn't have to wait for the dust to settle before re-engaging. I only had a standard -74 zig-zag muzzle device too - some of the folks with fancy-pants muzzle brakes were pretty much making a smoke screen of dust every time they fired in those trenches!

Poor Ian had to talk about all those percussion firearms when he's stated in the past how his interest isn't in caseless ammo options, unless he's changed. Hopefully he'll be able to look at more 'interesting' firearms at the next auctions that he's more intrigued by. Ian's grail gun: FG 42 Carbine they gave the paratroopers.

I can't be certain that you answered the "A1 vs A2" question. After re-watching it, it still seems like you both agreed that carry handles used to be cool but are no longer relevant, but didn't compare the original M16 upper receiver to the M16A2 upper receiver. I'm assuming that Itchy Dragon was asking more specifically about whether or not the ability to quickly adjust windage and elevation was a real advantage of the A2 or if the original's windage adjustment turret that required a tool or cartridge to turn was adequate, or even more desirable since it can't be manipulated by accident as easily.

David Burns A1>A2 for all practical purposes. The Marines wanted something better for their "highpower" style qualification range when they designed the A2 sights. No one really touches their sights in combat, that's why ACOGs have BDC reticles instead of target turrets.

Further evidence: the Canadians kept their "A1" style sights on their C7(until they went flattop with Elcans), and they're some of the best when it comes to military marksmanship.

It's so funny hearing somebody's top wish is to own PKM. For me, and being from Serbia might have something to do with this, it's like giving an option to wish for anything and choosing an agricultural tractor. Yeah, great tractor, one of the best tractors ever made, but still a tractor, wouldn't you want an 1963 Aston Martin DB5? And your answer is "Nope, that's a great tractor and I want it and nothing else!", which is hilarious to me.

In my opinion, martial arts training without physical training is a total waste of time. You'd be much more capable of winning a fight with one week of karate lessons and one year of strenuous exercise, than the other way around - especially when you're young and healthy. I'm frankly embarrassed at how much money I wasted on months and months of karate and aikido lessons while doing NOTHING to prepare my body for applying those techniques against someone who actually wanted to hurt me. Every class was just a bunch of lazy college students doing a dance in slow motion that none of us could do without instruction. I think skinny dudes like me tend to fall for the hype that martial arts (particularly oriental ones) are some kind of secret weapon that turns you into a badass, when the truth is they're useless without mental and physical alacrity. If I take up martial arts again (which I probably will), it'll be boxing or savate. You get one hell of a cardio workout every day that you train, and they emphasize the psychology of fighting to win.

I have a question about Ian's WWSD rifle, the so-called "Rifleman's" rifle. I believe you said the original intent was a DMR but you realized yesterday's designated marksman is today's rifleman but you kept the 18" barrel. I'm curious why you kept that length instead of going to 16" and saving even more weight and length. Is it about velocity?
@509Gman
@509Gman 6 жыл бұрын
TwentythreePER imo the only reason the 16" barrel exists is the NFA. Either stay at 18-20" or go to 14.5" they wanted two different flavors of rifles, so there you are.

with regards to bayonets, if you seriously need a bayonet for guarding or whatever, would it be simple enough to have a mount on the tube? the chance of you using it is so low that there isnt any need for it as an official part, but if the chance is there like with mounting lights, lasers and what have you.. aka, if people want a bayonet so much they can just mount it themselves for their own gun, and not waste your development time on something mostly irrelivant x3

Part of the "just as good as" disease is also context. Just as good as for what? Bears in Alaska? Snakes in the desert? In a match? For a lefty? The people who swear a k98 is better than an M1 Garand aren't fighting WWII they are hunting or something. Cost, purpose, environment, training and doctrine all matter. The "gamer" mentality says that you can CCW an AR-15 or use a Glock 9mm for bear. And sometimes it even works in real life and you make the news. But most of the time you end up in jail or eaten by a bear. Unfortunately, the news story about a unicorn is spread far and wide, while the typical results are boring statistics.

Regarding the question at 1:08:20 about foreigners owning guns, I'm actually a foreigner who has been in the US for 7 years, owned guns for 4 and been through a bunch of visas and is thoroughly familiar with the process. If you ever want to do an episode on that I could provide the information for it. It's (I would think) a pretty esoteric and interesting part of gun culture that suits InRange really well. I also had to deal with the Australian Federal Police and the LAPD because of guns and came out relatively unscathed, so it's not just buying guns.

+1 to Bergmann month. As Gustave Flaubert said, anything becomes interesting if you look at it long enough. I'm watching KZbin because it still does what MSM has forgotten how to do, take somebody who knows what they are talking about and just let them tell you about it. MSM seems to think we need an idiot presenter to represent our ignorance, so we get 45 minutes of moron and 5 minutes of expert, 4 of which are spent telling moron what was wrong with the dumb question his equally moronic script writers came up with in order to crowbar in some weak pun.

There have been a handful of bayonetings in the GWOT by US forces and at least two bayonet charges by U.S. Marines in Iraq. The first was in the early days of the invasion when elements of the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment came into contact with Fedeyeen at close quarters in some marshland. The second was at An Nasirya when a company of the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines fixed bayonets when it came into close contact with insurgents in a palm grove. While not bayonet charges during the Battle of Najaf there was heavy hand to hand fighting involving Marines to include bayoneting of several insurgents while clearing a hotel occupied by Mahdi Army.

Why doesn't Ian like Kahr? Never shot one, but hear great things about them. Interested in his opinion. And since you both answered the non-glock handgun with service pistol in mind, what about CCW specifically? Sure, any of the service handguns would do, but you both premised it with there being the different categories and chose 'general service'. Also curious, since you both are very warlike combat targeted in your competitions, what you both think about civilian defensive gun use combat and acceptable weapons/mindset/training for just that (under the burning truck in iraq against combatants with AK's and walking to my car in the city and being attacked by a man or two with at the worst another pistol/a knife are two very different circumstances)?

Karl, don't sell your editing skill short. You are well within a decent ratio of content to editing for the product you are delivering. A lot of the time saving that pros have is in workflow and tools. The stuff takes time, and the skill is in picking the shots, and covering the content in a way that tells the story you want to tell. The fact that you are willing to take the time shows that you care.

Regarding “just as good as”, some of it is justifying your own purchase. If I can only afford X, and you are showing off your XX+, I don’t want to look bad or a fool so I say “my X is just as good as your XX+”. For casual plinking, a Taurus revolver is as good as a S&W Performance Center. But not if you are Jerry Michulek.

Regarding the 'Gucci' gear: the JP buffer illustrates why word of mouth is the most effective advertising. You wanted a captured buffer, you knew JP made a good one, so you bought it. Also, it's not like you're a review site, where all you do is AR part reviews. You offer far more than that. In regards to WWSD, you had certain design criteria, and you really didn't seem to care about price. It's not like you're designing the new rifle for the military, you're making two(one each). What I can't grasp is why people are complaining about the parts that you put on YOUR AR. Why does the 'price tier' matter? The only questions that should ever matter are: "Does it work in my application?" and "If not, why not?"
@teryshaw7370
@teryshaw7370 7 жыл бұрын
Because they want a rifle to those same ends, but they want to do so for less expense - in this case, the hand guard + the buffer spring costs as much as the lower + upper + barrel, and they’re wishing for Karl and Ian to offer a modified, lower cost recipe. The answer here is simple - modify the recipe yourself.

I'd love to see a vid with more of Karl's thoughts on the Beretta 92. The US military kind of trashed its reputation in the US with their magazine and spare parts stupidity, and it's actually pretty underrated and a good value for the base model now.

Some ARs don't like them for some reason. They get all funky with the bolt catch and cause malfuntions apparently. Some they work fantastic with. Try it on your gun if you want it and see if it wprks out for you.

Voodoo innovations has an integrated gas key bolt carrier for just under $150 from their site (31/10/2017)... On the martial art point as long as the skill promotes an "all in" sparring you learn body control and the will to win, those at the points that matter in fight/flight adrenaline levels.

Karl, I used to sing in the Utah Opera Chorus and I once rehearsed 45 hours for a one time 1 hour performance so 16 hours editing for 15 minutes of video makes sense to me. This also applies to the 80% concept; I was pretty close to 100% as a professional choral singer but that was a cumulation of 20 years of experience singing the hardest things that I could find.

From a manufacturing standpoint the integrated gas key seems like a non-trivial problem to solve. The cam surfaces would not be easy to fabricate and the gas port hole would be an issue as well. Maybe a future additive manufacturing process or similar would change this but not anytime soon.

On the 99% skill level, ANY practical sparring martial art that gets above 81% is almost certainly overkill. My Kung Fu teacher trained at a temple in China, came to America, started a martial arts school and worked for an airline union... and has been in about six fights. Lifetime. If you are at 85% or 90% in any martial art whether it is boxing, karate, kung fu, etc you'll be fine. It is simply WAY better to be a 90th percentile boxer than a 50th percentile Brazilian jujitsu practitioner. Just like a hit with 20 gauge shotgun is more effective than a miss with a 12 gauge.

A long video unfortunately merits multiple comments, apologies. Being a civilian, and having to justify lethal force, I appreciate my bayonet lug for the reasons Ian pointed out. I would *not* reject a capable rifle for lack of a bayonet lug, but a 16" middy and a FSB, it takes a bayonet. 20" rifle, takes a bayonet. However, I also took my M7, properly sharpened it (unlike the angle grinder edge it was issued with) and fitted nice Walnut scales to it. It is no longer a bayonet to be paired with a fighting knife, but a fighting knife that doubles as a bayonet if the secondary need arises. I only keep 3 mags loaded (but 840 charged) assuming a only grab my belt with those 3 mags, 90 rounds *can* go quickly.

I would wholeheartedly agree the 5.45 is the way to go with an AK platform. However, the 7.62x39 seems to be well suited for the SKS rifles. I know they are dated, but I actually enjoy shooting them. Is there any of platforms out there for the 7.62x39 like bolt guns the anyone has experience with? The one problem you have with all them is the round drops fairly rapidly, so maybe it's best days are behind it.

For choosing a gun, if you have a range that rents pistols try a few out. It's a way to eliminate ones you would struggle with and narrow your choices. I found I hate dangling my pinky on a tiny grip but that shorter barrels didn't negatively affect me, the more rounded the grip (as opposed to flat-sided/squareish) the more I like it and I can shoot it more accurately, and that a high or low bore axis wasn't significant in my ability to shoot any of them. But that's me. Rent some guns if you can and see if you can learn anything BEFORE dropping $500 (and more for holster, ammo, etc.) on a gun. It should reduce the chances of you deciding you hate it later.

About the drum mag for military use. Take a look at the AR-100 series sadly there's not much out there on it. It's a variant/update of the AR-18 as far as I can tell and the very limited marketing material there is for it implies carry a 100 round drum in the gun and reload with 30 round box mags. Also would be a great topic to ask Jim Sullivan about if you guys get the chance to talk with him again.

One comment on "empty hand" skills. BJJ seems to be really effective and thus popular, but there is one issue left out most of the time: in real life there almost never is just one opponent. And given that you NEED some skills to avoid take-down - do you really want to be choking one bad guy on the ground while two of his friends are standing next to you?

I have a muzzle break on my ar. Not because I wanted it but became NJ state laws. It's pinned on. I was going for an ar-15 that looked like an a2 but some things had to be changed to be legal. Like no lug for a bayonet and a pinned muzzle break. If the rifle had an adjustable stock that would also need to be pinned but mine has an a2 stock so it's ok.
